Hunting Story good or bad You decide

Post by Dereck »

Couple of weeks ago I went out hunting in the evening on Friday after work and my one daughter wanted to come along. So we headed out me with all my gear and her with oversized camo on and pink and brown rubber boots.
We got to the field and walked the 700 yds to the back corner where the farmer says he sees deer quite often.
Set up on the field at 5 PM with me facing to the field and her facing to the corn behind us so she could see back and to my right.
She has much better hearing than her old man because she kept saying she heard something that I could not and a squirrel would hop out.
When we first set up I told her if she sees a deer to just tap my leg a point.
At 6:50 she taps my leg and with eyes the size of dinner plates points back to my right behind me.So lean over and whisper "what is it".She says "deer two" I risk a look and see feet under the branches get the Phoenix turned around and a nice 6 pt walks into view my daughter lowers her hand which was still pointing and the buck looks right at her.Oh ya this is all taking place at 12 feet.He stares for about 10 sec and continues forward I put the sights on his chest and let the arrow fly was sure it would hit it's mark accept the fence between us saved the buck and defected the arrow high.Broad heads spark quite nice when they contact metal. :D

So good or bad

This is how my daughter reflected on the experience.
She told her mother, brother and sister that she was Sad, Happy, Happy about what happened.

Sad because we didn't get to have a deer dinner
Happy that she got to see a deer that close
Happy that the deer gets to have a longer life

I true hunter at heart I would say

Good for sure. Being 12 ft. from a wild deer is an experience she will remember her whole life. My nephew still talks about a similar experience. And dad, you're still her hero...just pray she don't start calling you "Sparky". Gary

Good story and good hunt, even if the deer lived to see another day.

That is a great story and great experience for the both of you to have shared! How old is your daughter; I'm wondering when to start bringing my son along?

As for the fence, I had the same thing happen to me once and I think there is another poster here who also recently shared a similar occurence. It would be hard to hit a strand of wire if you tried, except when you but put a farm fence between you and a deer!

My daughters are ten and my son is eleven.
Tried taking them turkey hunting two years ago with little success too twitchy or they get too cold but now they seem to handle it better.
Give him a shot see how he likes or dislikes it and go from there.

Hope to attend some 3D shoots down your way in the spring and summer just bought another Phoenix off vixenmaster so the kids can take turns coming out to shoots as well

I'd say good.

You got your daughter out hunting. Great job. Another female hunter and spokesperson for the tradition.

You got her up close to the quarry. She was able to study its habits and mannerisms. You got her heart pumping and excited.

And...you showed her why it's called 'hunting' and not 'killing' or 'shooting', because, sometimes, stuff happens once you let that projectile fly. Fences...branches...trunks...they can all get in the way, sometimes. Small objects in the way don't always appear in a scope or peep sight.

You also gave her the drive to get out there and do it again.

Well done.

When you take a kid out, you've done a good thing.

When they get to see the quarry you're after, you've done a good thing.

When they get to see the shot, you've done a good thing.

When they learn that even the best laid plans can fall apart, you've done a good thing!
