Serving question

Post by Goose smasher »

How long should the serving last on the string of my new exomax? The first one wore out in about 150 shots and now the second one is at around 100 shots and its starting to show some wear like fraying. Is this normal or do I maybe have a slight set up problem? I'm new to crossbows so I'm not sure. Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Assuming it is rough latches (you'll see more fraying on the right side) it would be easier to help if you displayed your location. In Canada call Excalibur and in the US call Danny Miller 740 483 2312. If you want to tackle it yourself shoot me a PM.

Boo,I think your right on the money! It is wearing more on the right side.Do you mean the hooks on the cocking aid or on the bow itself? I bought it at the Archers nook in London, would they be able to fix it for me? Thanks for your help!

Donno if they will but maybe they'll ship the bow to Excalibur for you. You're second best answer is no. You really should post a picture of the string on the bow at rest so I can confirm that it is the latches.

Without confirming it could be the latches or from you over-cocking the bow. Over cocking the bow can cause fraying or cutting of the serving. The damage will be seen on the serving near the outer edge of the deck/rail.

That really sounds like it.The damage is more to the side of the deck.I didn't know you could over cock a crossbow.

Yep, it's a common thing. The best way to avoid it is to go slower and make the rope just the right length to cock the bow. If the string is too short it is easy to pull the string right into the end of the string slot of the trigger housing. It would be a good idea as well to radius the edge of the end of the string slot so that the edge is rounded. All it takes is a small knife or the corner of a screw driver.

Just a guess :?: maybe the left-handed folks wears on the left side of the rail, the dominating arm may cause this :?:

Just guessing at this too but I think the rope cocker would eliminate any forces of a dominate left/right arm because the hooks travel along the rope on pulley wheels. One of it's main purposes is to cock the bow evenly and eliminate uneven cocking that can occur if the bow is cocked by hand? Like I say just guessing but that's what's rolling around in my head. :)
