parallax I just didnt know

Post by strum »

well you learn every day and after Bill T. mentioned that most folks dont know how to focus there scopes i thought ,,ok ill re read my instuctions and i found Parallax is factory set so no adjustment needed..so i thought what the heck it that?. then after i googled it and learned i found out im a duff :D
the ring on the front of my scope (VZ) had got loose one day and so i found that when i tightened it i moved the lens beneath it..then i found if i screwed it in or out i could focus the target in my scope..WRONG!!! although it seemed to focus the target I was messin up the parallax.
heres how i reset it so if im doing it wrong i would love to know..
first i focused the scope by looking at the sky and adjusting the eyepeice till the reticals were clear at first glance..them i put the crossbow in a solid bench and got the cross hairs lined up on a small dot on the target(30 yards) then when moving my eye left then right i adjusted till the cross hairs did not move off the dot..almost like they were painted on.. once i let my eyes rest i rechecked this ..i put a small dot to let me know if it moves and tighted the ring..
i know this is a long post but i can see where if this is right groups will tighten up..happy parallaxing...disclaimer ..Do not fool with this if you dont understand!!! if its not broke dont fix it!!

You did a good job. I would have gone about it just as you.
I did the same thing years ago to a big game rifle scope. Parallax is usually set at 100 - 150 yards. I made a tool out of a hack saw balde to loosen the lock ring on the objective lense and move the entire objective assembly. I moved it out until the parallax set at 30 yards. I then mounted the scope that was gathering dust onto a .22 rimfire. The scope still sits on that rifle today. Parallax is often misunderstood by rifle shooters. Thanks for your experience with parallax.

Very interesting Stan. I come from a shotgun none scope using area so scopes are foreign to me. Will have the play that one out on my crossbow scope. Thanks and yes it hurts my head.

g'day strum, mate your way sounds ok & makes sence to me & l will try it, but the way l've been doing it is to turn the end peace in or out sometimes we may see double cross hairs when l get both cross hairs back into one l then no l'm on the money & tighten it up. but it pays to look outside in clear light as well as inside where light is not as bight..regards frank

if the parallax is off the crosshairs will apear to move as you shift you eye from left to right making accurate shooting a challange unless you anchor and look through the scope exactly the same every time..
