What is this

Post by Close Up »

We were on a canoe trip in Algonquin Park and some of us on the trip got to see some exciting wild life. Two of us got to see a mature bull moose just at dusk (which unfortunately made for poor dark photos). Another person got to see up close and personal, a young bull moose, while contemplating life on a the boom box, it walked up from the lake about 30 feet from her and eyed her up contentedly until a noise at the campsite had him ambling off into the bush. (No photos this time cause who takes their camera to the boom box! Apparently she will next time!) That was all day 1 and into the morning of day 2. We saw Otters playing, lots of loons and herons, a fisher? and then this strange bird that we don't recognize. It was about a 12 - 18 inches tall, when it stretched its head toward the water it's neck was about 6 inches stretched out. Unfortunately again the lighting wasn't the greatest as it was the morning after a major storm went through and was about 6:30 am and still pretty dim out. We never heard a noise out of it and when it took off it just launched right into flight. Does anyone have any ideas on what it is?

Yup, bittern, also know as a mudhen.

Shitepoke is an old name for a blue heron, ya still hear it used in the country.

Kind of looks like a Green Heron, also known as a Green Backed Heron. Probably not a male. Either a juvenile or a female.

Shitepoke

noun

1. the green heron, Butorides virescens
2. the black-crowned night heron, Nycticorax nycticorax
3. the American bittern, Botaurus lentiginosus

Etymology: From shite + poke, with reference to the birds' habit of defecating when disturbed.
