He was able to make it home for 5 days before he goes to Afghanistan. Got in late Monday so we've been hunting. He is designated shooter. Haven't seen many as weather has turned for the worse, 80° and bright sunshine.
This morning he sat in a ground blind. Had five deer hang up just out of range, They paced back and forth blowing and stomping. There was a big spikehorn that was feeling his testofterone and was keeping them away. He finally came down the trial but would not turn to offer a broadside shot By this time my son was a bit pi$$ed at him as he wants to shoot a big, fat meat doe. Finally when the buck was 14yds away he lost his patience and shot it through the head. Buck went immediately into a dirt nap position. Took in to our processor after a couple of pictures and field dressing. He weighted 142lbs dressed. Lots of fat and should be real tender.
I'm happy my son was able to make it home and also to get to hunt with him. Now I told him he has to shoot a nice meat deer for me before he leaves in 3days

I wish him all the best in Afghanistan. A nice way to spend a couple of days before shipping off.
New a guy when I lived in Macon, GA years ago that deer hunted with a verticle bow and field points, no broadheads, but he only tried head shots. That way he didn't have to blood trail them. Missed a lot, but killed a lot too, and no wounded deer. Saw a deer he killed that still had the arrow sticking perfectly straight out like a unicorn. Wish I had a picture.
Thats freakin awsome! Congrats to your son. Tell him I said thanks for his service for what he is doin and to stay safe over there && to come home soon & safley.
*PRETTY IN PINK, DEADLY IN CAMO!
*In the fall I get to kill em in the rut, but in the spring I get to watch em strut.
*You can take the girl outta woods, but you can't take the addiction outta the girl!
*Can't kill anything sitting on the couch.
Darrel, I know how much time with your son means to you. It could have been Buckzilla and not mattered - the true trophy was time shared. Congrats to you both.
I am happy you are getting to spend time with your son I am sure these few days mean a lot to you.
Congrats on the buck also he will eat well.
Also thank your son for his service for me I appreciate my freedom he provides.
I know that time hunting together is special and i wish your son a safe return home from Afghanistan.I havent hunted with my oldest son in over 4 years since he entered the Army right after high school.
What better memories for you both to share to lessen the distance while your boy completes his tour. Congrats to you both ! Thanks for sharing and thanks to your Son for his service .We may be different countries but some of our boys are shoulder to shoulder over there as they've been since before world war one. There will be many more hunts to come.......
