Two more for the Exomax!

Post by VAHunter »

After getting my first Buck ever during the Archery season last Thursday I bagged another one on Tuesday this week, along with a big Doe the same day. I went with a friend to his spot where I had never been before and bagged a Doe in the Morning, which I had to because here we have Earn a Buck where you have to kill a Doe before you can kill each of your second or third bucks of the season, and then got this nice 8 point in the afternoon. I was in a random tree on a powerline cutover and this buck stepped out of the brush 5 yards from me. I slowly turned the Exomax and drilled him right down through the chest, if I'd had a compound bow I probably wouldn't have been able to draw without him spotting me.

Seasons only 2 weeks old and I have a freezer full of venison and only 1 Buck tag left, but we can kill unlimited Does, 2 a day here. What a season so far, trully my best ever! Thank You Excalibur, don't think I would have gotten any of these 3 deer with a compound.

Not to pleased with the Spitfire XP's though. The did fine on the Doe, I shot her right behind the shoulder at 25 yards but she was quartering towards me. It missed the Lungs but hit the Liver and came out her belly through the stomach. Some of her stomach and instestines were hanging out of her when I found her. Took an hour or more to find her because of only a few drops of blood on the ground even though she only went about 75 yards, its very thick cover there.

The buck was only about 5 yards from the tree I was in. I shot him in the chest right behind the shoulder but the broadhead hit his sterum and broke the small blade off the front and the broadhead was resting right inside of the hide when I dressed him. The arrow only went in half way and he broke it in two when he ran. He went about 75 yards also but I found no blood at all on the ground. Lucky to find him in the dark in about 15 minutes since it was so thick of cover there, he ran straight ahead and I found him dead beside a downed tree. I believe if it had been a fixed blade it would have gone all the way through him and left a blood trail to follow, his one lung did have a nice big Spitfire shaped slice in it though! Next year I'm definietly going to try some Slicktricks to see how they fly. Good Luck everyone.

Nice deer!
Was the arrow that broke carbon and did it contaminate any meat?
I guess you like the exomax.

Yes, Carbon. Snapped right in two where you see the entrance hole in the photo, so no contaminated meat that I know of. Front half of arrow was lying inside of his chest cavity, could have cut myself on the broadhead but luckily felt the arrow before the blades.

Yes, I love my Exomax. 4 shots taken in the field, and 4 deer for the freezer. What's not to Love! :D

BigNasty, Amen brother, relibility should be the #1 thing we look for in killing instruments, not might work great or maybe cut a big hole!

BTW, saw your 12 pt. nice deer for VA. Never seen one that big in the woods. What county you hunting in? I killed my 10pt in Rappahanock and the 8pt in Clark.

Congratulations on your deer!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I switched back to fixed blades a few years ago and have had 100% success with them. It's all about putting them in the right place.

I've been using spitfires for over 10 years...never had a problem!! I use the regular spitfires with the chisel point, blown threw many a shoulder with them!

Congrats on the buck. I use the spitfire XP's also. I've killed 2 does and one buck from 18-30 yards and have always had pass through shots. The last doe I shot; the broadhead cut through the ribs on one side and came out the edge of the shoulder blade on the other. She was at 18yards. It did bend one of the blades enough to where it wouldnt close but it had served its purpose.
