Controlled hunt buck

Post by peter p »

I shot this buck at around 4 pm on the opening day of the southern Ontario controlled deer hunt.
He came sneaking in while I was in my ladder stand.

It was a 45 yard broad side shot which I thought I missed due to the way he ran...no donkey kick or anything to indicate a hit.

I shot at him again (missed) as he was running and he immediately came to a stop with his back side facing me.
I could see his tail twitching so I put the cross hairs above his tail and fired dropping him instantly.

I got down thinking I may have to shoot him again but when I got there he had expired and noticed that I had hit him with my first shot.

He had a huge hole just above the heart and there was blood everywhere back tracking to the first shot area.

He's a big bodied deer but only has 6 points.

I tried a new slug this season. The Winchester Supreme Elite Dual Bond 375 grains at 1800 fps sabot slug.
I do not like the way they performed.

There was no pass through on the broadside shot.
The slug actually mushroomed nicely on impact breaking the ribs but deflected on impact ripping through the lungs puncturing the stomach and blowing a hole through the liver and stopping just under the skin.

The rear end shot broke the spine and the slug just died there in-between the hips.

I think they may be too light and too fast of a slug to be used on big game.

I will be going back to the Winchester 1 oz standard velocity sabots.
I used them for years and never had any issues with them.

I still shoot a smooth bore and I had the same problem with a Slugger 7/8 oz. Great pass through but my crossbow arrow would do more damage. Had to track the deer about 100 yards. I'm going back to the Challenger slugs. That is a big deer and you seem to have lots of help hauling it out.

I learned the hard way that those extra shots might be necessary. Congratulations! Nice deer. Is that deer smiling?
