Apex for hunting? Looking for Kids bow

Post by NonTypicalCPA »

I'm looking for a crossbow for my kids for next fall deer hunting. They will be 10 this coming April. I'm looking for suggestions and was thinking that the Apex might produce enough kill power? I can't find the specs on it but I'm guessing it's lighter and smaller than the Vixen II?

I'm also wondering if I should start them off with open sights or go right to a scope?

Don't know about the Apex, but the VixenII has a shorter stock than the rest of the Excaliburs and is only a few dollars more.
You'll probably have to cock it for them anyway.

I can tell you the Apex would not be legal for hunting here in NC, you may to check in your state. Here it is 150lb minimum draw weight.

Santa got my 10 year old a VixenII last X-mas. Him NOT being able to cock it was a selling point. He will grow into it but for right now dad has to be present to supervise (and cock). Figured this might help prevent sore thumbs and injured neighborhood pets. Has worked so far.

This is exactly the situation I am in with my ten year old this year.

Thanks folks! Sounds like a Vixen it is. Good point on having to be there for them to use. That was my plan anyways, but kids will be kids on occasion.

Is there a consensus to start with open sights?

The peep and pin are deadly. One advantage is they only have to look through the peep at post front and target. Their eye will automatically center it up for them.

In most states (unless you're hunting on your own land in some instances), an adult has to be present to take immediate control of the weapon.

Let them start with open sights and learn how to shoot with that. You may want to also consider some type of red dot scope. They generally don't have any magnification, and will help them if they have a tendency to move their head around.
