Firebolts...how many times can you fletch?

Post by georgiaboy »

I cleaned up six carbon firebolts this morning that i practice with, when i tried to glue the new vanes on they wouldn't stick for nothing!! This would be the third set of vanes if i could get them to stick. I'm not doing anything different than i did before...strip the vanes, use a de-bonder to loosen the residual glue, wipe clean & sand lightly with a fine grit sandpaper then clean shaft with acetone before re-fletching. I'm using the gorilla brand super glue with the blue top.
Do you think i've got the "goody" out of the shaft & may need to use a wrap to get a good bond. If so do the wraps weigh enough to change your poi? My hunting arrows do not have wraps on them.
Any advice would be appreciated :?
Thank you

Maybe your glue is too old, I use Bohning Fletchtite glue works good for me.

Have refletched some of my carbons 4 times never had trouble with adhesion . I would tend to think the problem is the glue . Old tube maybe ?

That would be my guess too.
Cyanoacrilate [superglue] has a shelf life.
Store out direct light.
Heat will also affect shelf life.
For this reason I buy the smallest bottles available.
Your brand of glue is a good one, the same as I use.
It's the same one that onestringer says to use.

To increase shelf life, I put mine in at least one zip lock bag and store in the fridge.

No need to warm it up, use straight from the fridge and put back as soon as you can.

Either i got some bad vanes or my shafts just won't take glue. I will try some wraps next. :?

Try cresting w/ laquer paint vs wraps. I used to have a link to a vid, but it's been problematic lately.

I love cresting vs wraps. Easier to get last years taxes back than remove old wraps, yes, I have no patience, lol.

Once you remove old laquer paint w/ acetone soaked rag, you will see the diff.

What vanes are you using? I can't remember the brand but awhile back a couple other members had the same problem and it turned out to be the vanes. Perhaps someone else can help me out here cuz my memory is brutal.

Using rag scrub the shaft with ajax then rinse really well with really hot water then allow to dry over night. You should find the surface squeaky clean. Also hit the bases of the vane some sand paper then a swipe with acetone.

I'm using bpro redhead 4in. duravanes...never had this problem.
I will try boo's advice next, never heard of painting the shafts but that may be another option.

Well that sucks.
How long did you leave the vane in the jig?
The reason I ask is because during times od high humidity, I have had trouble with this istant glue working instantly. 1/2 hour later and the bond was good. Left the article over night and it was fine. This was not on arrows but just the same the bond took longer than expected.

Question:
Was the glue still wet or was it dry and bonded to the vane??

I have the AZ easy fletch, i usually leave them in about two-three minutes...any longer and i have problems opening the tool because of over run of glue.
The glue was very tacky, what vanes would stick i could go back an hour later and pull them off...i'm stumped.

Cleaning the base of the vane with acetone should remove any release agent left on the vane during manufacturing .

Are you using a contaminated rag when you clean with acetone.

The reason I ask is because the debonder you use will also keep the new application of glue from setting. Do not use the same rag.

The other thing is that I would let the arrows dry longer after using the debonder.
After the arrows have been scuffed a number of times, the surface will be harder to get clean of the debonder.

As for glue on your fletching jig, I have seen somewhere a teflon release tape you can apply to your jig. The glue is supposed to fall right of this tape.

I just don't know...........hope some of this helps!

It's all in the prep. If you use superglue use only water to clean the shaft. You can still scrape and sand but only water after that. No cleaning of the vanes is needed.
Go to NAP web site and find the help tech area for a better explanation. Some cleaners will cause a chemical reaction with the glue and result in poor or no adhesion.
If you use other than suoerglue the prep with stronger cleaners is OK.
