Trophy cam help

Post by bugs »

I set my camera up and didnt make it back to the bush for 4 weeks, I had over 1000 pictures and I am sure 1/2 were sun becuase you cant avoid sun in a smaller bush no matter what direction you put the cam. There was an error on my card and I could only see a few pics of coons then the card jammed up when loading. I have my computer guy at work trying to get the pictures off for me which he said may not be possible.

I just went to get my second card out and there was nothing at all. I used a 4gig Lexar card and now read I should have used a SanDisk card and 2 gig or smaller, is this the case? I also forgot to format the disk which could also be a problem. Can you format the disk on your home computer or must it be formatted on the trail camera? The card I just took out was only formatted on my home computer. I had Chester with me so having a sniffing hound who was getting impatient didnt leave me the free hands to format on the trail camera but now I wonder if I should head back out tomorrow for fear I may not have any pictures again.

As long as they were both SD card it does not matter. I don't know if you camera takes an SD card larger than 2 gigs so you should check with the manufacturer sometimes there's firmware up grades that allow larger SD cards. As far as pics taken with cards not formatted don't expect to see any pics. It can be formatted with your computer at home.

Good reply Boo.
I am pretty sure the older models were limited to 2 gigs. I know that is what I run in mine and they are both trouble free. I have formated them both ways.

Thanks guys, the formatted disk out there should be okay then. I just wasnt sure if the camera did a normal format or something special to the card. My Moultie just took any card in or out and all I had to do was erase the old pics, I never had to reformat. The few pics I got to see appear to be better and more consistant with game.

Most memory cards have a little sliding lock.
When in the lock position it won't allow you to delete the image.

I always format my cards on my PC before i replace them in the cameras. I had a wildgame camera that would not save any images unless the card was formatted so it has become a habit for me. I ahve not run into a camera that had a problem with the storage size of the card (even though they all list a ax capacity). If the card gives you problems you can always format it to a smaller capacity and it should work in the camera then.

You do not mention the year of your Trophy cam, but I am guessing you have one thats a few years old(5mp?) If this is the case, then yes, the maximum sized card you can use is 2GB, and make sure your camera is turned "OFF" before taking the card out or putting it in, and as already mentioned make sure the "write protect" is disabled on your card before installing it.(though if you forget and leave it on, I believe the cam will beep and turn off)

Also, its recommended to format the SD card with the trail cam before using it for the first time.

As for having so many pic's in one week, are you sure there is no branches or something that is moving in the wind and setting off your cam?? What is your P.I.R set at??? at this time of year when its cool, you should have it set at "Low".

I have one of the first BTC's, use only Sandisk SD cards and formatted with the camera when I got it. I'm glad I read this post as I completely forgot it's limited to a 2GB card. It had been trouble free until I put a 4GB card in it. Now I know why it quit taking pictures!!!!

One thing I noticed where I live , is that 2GB cards are getting hard to find, so if you need an extra one you may want to pick one up now.

Ive been using a 4GB (non sandisk) card in mine (2011 model) with no problems, and without formatting either. But you do have to watch out for the cheap chinese cards. All SD cards are number rated. The super cheap ones have such a slow reading/tranfer rate it causes problems for some devices like my GPS.
Its a good idea to play with the cam in the yard for a few days and get to know the sensitivity levels too. The temperature can play havoc with sensitivity.

You must have a newer model than Bugs.

I found the instructions for my two older model (5 mp) cameras and it states 2 GB max for SD card.
