Had the crosshairs on one

Post by wabi »

Was in my stand this evening enjoying the time outdoors. Checked the time and it was getting close to the end of legal hunting hours. A minute later I caught a bit of movement (white) off to my left. Sure enough a doe was moving my way. About the time she entered the food plot (35 yards away) a red fox came running out of the woods and crossed the plot. She froze, but didn't retreat. A couple minutes passed and she stepped closer. I eased the Phoenix up to the shooting rail and put the crosshairs on her. She turned slightly and that gave me an angle I wasn't 100% comfortable with (quartering away, but borderline for a sure double lung hit) and I also was thinking, "How much time has passed since I looked at the time?"
Decided to let her walk today. Coughed to spook her and she moved off about 50 yards so I lowered my bow and climbed down. Checked the time again after I moved away from the stand and it would have been very close on being a legal shot.
I'm glad I passed on it. There will be more chances.

At least I had one in the sights for a change!

If you killed every deer you see you would soon tire of it and probably quit hunting. I get as much satisfaction aiming at a doe or buck and thinking "Wack" or "BOOM" as I do pulling the trigger. I need one or two does a year in the freezer to eat and if I take a large buck it is a bonus.

Watching the world come alive at sunup and seeing it slow back down at dark out of a deer stand is the principal reason I still hunt. The kill is simply a treat that is occassionally enjoyed.

Then again.......maybe I am just getting old.

That would have been hard for me not to take the shot on a fox but later on her coat will be better than it is now.

Sure does get the heart pumping when you see a deer and line up for a shot! Good luck and you will get one next time. :) :)

robert, It may just be something to do with age. I'm 57 and I feel the same way but I find the late evening hunts to be more of a problem as my night vision isn't as good as it once was. I'm alright most mornings but the late evening low light is just hard to judge at times.
Wabi, I admire you for checking the watch, I know hunts who never even question daylight hours. There would a lot less deer killed if all would obey those regulations.

Just wondering why you dont like quartering away shots? Thats the one I normally wait for! I have hit heart, lungs, & Liver all in one shot may times with that one!
It was a hard quartering away shot. Hard to explain, but the deer was probably at a 45º angle to me. Could have probably killed it, but I hate to blood trail one at night and prefer a shot I'm sure will put them down without much trailing.
