Post by Oppie »

Started a week aog, wife found a tick on her hand, took one off the cats face last night, pulled one off my daughetr's leg this morning, got one on my hand this evening, Taking showers every time I come back from the woods, field ,lawn.... all though I don't mind the strip search

Take the time to check for em.

I keep a bottle of dog flea and tick shampoo in the shower for when I feel them crawling on me. Don't make fun, it works. :?

Just learned of a new trick to get them loose if they get dug in. Put a drop of dish soap on them and they will back out willingly as they cannot breath.

I am of the understanding that they will only regurgitate (infecting you with whatever they carry) if agitated while being dislodged. I have used the old hot match head trick in the past, but this seems very sound to me.

I use a tick puller tool I got from our vet, looks like a small plastic spoon with a deep V cut in the front, pops em right out.

I actually had one of them attach to me this year!
A rare event for me!
Oddly mosquitoes and ticks rarely bite me. I attribute it to my healthy diet (plenty of coffee) and the fine cigars I smoke. They just can't take the buzz from all the caffeine & nicotine.

We treat our gear with permethrin the night before we go out and have not had any tick or chigger problems. You Sawyers sells it premixed $ or you can buy it in bulk and mix it yourself at a greatly reduced price. Once dry it has no odor and bonds with the clothing material.

I bought a gallon of 60% and mixed it at a higher concentration than the store bought stuff and we still ended up with over 40 gal of the stuff.

You need to apply .15oz of permethrin molecules to a garment for it to be effective regardless of the size (small or xxxxl makes no difference) and it lasts for about 6 laundry cycles or 3 mo which ever comes first.

The biggest thing to remember is that you need to apply it ahead of time so you clothes are completely dry or it can irritate you skin. Of for you cat lovers out there, keep it away from the kitties as the liquid form causes problems with their nervous system and can cause fatal paralysis until the clothing is dry.

If anyone is interested I can post more specifics on the stuff I bought from amazon.

I didn't have that much trouble with regular dog ticks this year, it was the friggin' little deer ticks that ate me up! :x We've had a couple of frosts so that has slowed the little buggers down quite a bit. Supposed to freeze sometime next week.

I HATE THOSE THINGS!!!!!

I bought 3 of these after we first moved to NC. I keep one in the house and each car. Works great at removing the little buggers - even the little timy deer ticks. I highly recommend this .

Be aware that there is a disease spread by ticks ( lime disease ) often over looked by doctors or misdiagnosis very serious not prevalent in all parts if the country just a heads up
