Sunday Morning Coyote

Post by Adrian J Hare »

Well today my buddy Wayne joined me and after him buying a new used 22-250 Rem 788 and got it tuned in yesterday at my range we thought that if it works lets see how well its going to do the job.

Our first set was a total bust after sticking in the Mojo Critter when a snow storm starts the minute the stake went in and it snowed so bad that 12 minutes into the set I stopped everything and stood up and said were done, i'm not hunting in this.

We traveled down off the higher ground and the weather was much better so we did a set at one of the places I hunt often with no luck. It was a great sit and we enjoyed it enough to try another place. Wayne says he has a spot that we may try and when offered I can not resist as new spots tend to produce well.

As we drive up to the spot the first thing we notice is a track crossing the road and down the fence line towards the small woods. We made out way to the woods but the wind was not perfect but close to a cross wind towards the woods so I decided that we would call on the down wind end of the woods so a yote would have to break to the open to enter the calling area.

We get set up and I have Wayne face the down wind side and I sat beside him and just faced the woods with the gun pointedmore the up wind side and started off with a low Volume 25 Cottontail Dst let it for 1 minute and up the volume to 36 for 30 seconds and lower it again to Volume 25 for a total of 3 minutes. I then hit pause. I spot a Crow in the woods dive and land on a branch back off the feild edge about 30-40 yards and carried on scolding something and I say to Wayne that crow is pissed about something "Keep an Eye"

I then scan the wood edge and notice an object that was a bright golden colour but never thought and glanced on down the wood edge and when my eyes came back up the woods edge theres the dog running straight out towards the Critter.

I whisper to Wayne and say one coming to your left and we both move and wayne gets ready. As the dog works her way into the 200 range she hits the brakes fast and wheels and runs back and down wind and stops.

Wayne takes the shot and the wack and spin the yote game starts and then she falls over. Waynes first yote off the caller and what a great time we had. The New gun worked great and another great day in the yote hunting woods.

We took the pic from the setup place and the yote came from straight behind us from in the picture.
