Mechanical or Fixed

Post by the canuck »

Hi all I know that this is a common question out there regarding the use of mechanical or fixed broadheads, my question is how durable would the X-act mechanical broadhead be on a Moose? I am still not sold on it but I like the field point accuracy. Has anyone used these with any success on large game like moose, especially if it hits a rib. I am shooting a 380 Matrix.

I never used one, but Excal says they're good. So i would trust their Judgement & say a Moose doesn't stand a chance! :)

I have always like mechanicals for deer but mechanicals for moose I would be reluctant to use because of the heavy bone structure vs hinged mechanical blades. I left my mechanicals at home when I hunted moose with my Excalibur.

I think that is what I am going to do I just didn't want to be switching broadheads when Moose season is over, maybe I will stick with fixed. Thanks for the replies.

I prefer the Mechanical's and their all I use

I like the larger cutting surface. To me the ex-act's are a good BH, but I don't know if I would use them for
moose. I would try a good strong fixed blade like a Slick trick
But I have never hunted moose with my bow so I don't know for sure.

After much research I think I may go mech's this year with the 380 for moose. It has been done many times in the past. poundage does play a key in performance of these heads, look for the one with stiff blades and a good back support or brace on the blades.

I just shot 125gr G5 Striker broadheads out of my 380 and they are deadly accurate out to 50 yards, same as my field tips. No adjustment necessary, these are fixed blade, I didn't think that type of accuracy was possible but it is.
