String jump

Post by Colt SAA »

I keep reading and hearing how loud crossbows are. Just wondering if you guys experience string jump from deer?

The deer have about 1/4 sec sound to impact at 25/35 yards. That is not a lot of time to react. Sound = 1125 ft/sec and arrow 300 ft/sec. The deer I shot did NOT seem to react to the sound at all.

Key is definitely to shoot them in a relaxed state. Once those ears perk up, their chances of jumping go up as well.
That said, inside 35 yards, they don't stand a chance either way.

This is one of the reasons 30 yards is my maximum range. My Equinox is loud, but I shot a deer at 25 yards double lung and she never moved until after the shot. I found her 40 yards away stone cold dead.

I wouldn't worry about any noise just keep your shots at a reasonable distance.

Never had one jump the string. All my deer have been shot within 35 yards.
Those that I've missed were 100% operator error .

My string jumps every time I pull the trigger.

We have had some extensive conversations here on the forum about deer jumping the arrow . . .complicated mathmatics . . .everything.

There was an article in Field and Stream that did a really good job on that subject a few years ago.

Basically, at less than 40 yards with an arrow going over 300 FPS, then a deer does not have much of a chance of jumping the arrow.

However, there are a lot of variables . . .and most hunters do not want to give up the term "String jump" because they use it instead of "I missed".

A friend of mine claimed a deer jumped his string from 20 yards . . .I said no way because I knew his bow was slinging arrows well over 300 FPS. He said, I saw it jump . . .I said, OK . . .if you looked up in time to see it jump, then you missed the shot. He still claims the deer jumped the arrow . . .I still say, no way.

His own words prove it was a plain ol' miss. That's because deer don't jump up in reaction to the sound of the bow. A string "jump" is actually the deer crouching DOWN, coiling itself up to spring and run. It a reflex flight reaction to a startling sound. When a deer "jumps" the string, its actually involuntarily ducking and the arrow flies over its back.

If you buddy saw the deer jump up, then he simply shot low and grazed its chest.

The famous video of the deer looking up at the guy in a stand and he shoots and you see the arrow go over it's back, that was one of the kickers at that time to really push puffs and any thing you could put on a bow to make it quiet, he would have missed anyway. Sumner's got it right for sure, Scott hows things going?
