Titanium Diet

Post by Normous »

I'm replacing our 4 mainframe/riser and limb/riser screws (5/16" - 18 x 1 3/4") heavy steel screws with Custom high grade Titanium screws to reduce some weight from our Blackout 380 front ends. These take 2-3 weeks for my Custom request.
I have already machined the Reds to half their original weight and reduced the stirrup weight by rounding the edges and drilling holes every 3/4" or so. In addition, I have used much shorter lighter screws for the stirrup/riser .

More to come...

The offer is still there to field test them next month Norm! Would be less weight for me to carry for a more accurate review! What do you think?

I just swapped out risers this morning for hunting with my vixen. I had the riser off my vortex on it with the string stoppers, cut off d bars , stirrup. an now my rope stirrup an what a different feel an balance . the less weight up front the better balanced it feels to me.

We have run out of time for the field test Scott, sorry, our deer season starts Oct 1st. I'm 8 minutes from the bridge, you are welcome anytime for a visit and beer(s).

Buddy I'm going to take you up on that offer one day. Until then a good snap shot of your bow laying across a nice deer will do!

Curious to how you made a rope cocker? What kind of rope? Do you then cut your arrows so that the broadhead is encased in the riser? Sounds like a good idea. It probably deadens the sound somewhat also.

I'm using the factory rope cocker. The stirrup is still mounted in the factory location, just I lightened it somewhat.

Chris at www.ti64.com (201-733-9111) is making the Countersunk 5/16" 18 x 1 3/4" Titanium screws fo me and is making extra to up his inventory on that size for anybody who may be interested in lightening their Excalibur front ends.

(note: the limb/riser screw that Excalibur uses is 1 1/2" long and you will need to cut them. The riser/mainframe is 1 3/4" long.)

$7 each (plus shipping) and once they arrive I will compare weights and report back. Will it be dramatic?, likely not but ever bit adds up.

Titanium is about 45% lighter than steel meaning this mod will shed about 2 to 2.5 steel screws worth of weight.

Wrong guess, I have lightened every Excalibur I've owned since 1991 and the 380 is no exception. It is my preference to carry lighter equipment into the field.

Lightened gear sure makes things easier I would rather carry a 15lb climber stand than a 25lb, light and compact has always been my choice.

Ya but 10 lbs on a climber and quarter oz on your crossbow are two different things!
