Early seaon TICKS

Post by robertyb »

Mosquitoes are a major pain in the butt in early season but I find ticks to be a worst problem. Thus, a few years ago I started using Sawyers and other brands of store bought sprays using Permethrin in them. They work well to kill any tick that may get on your clothes and even take care of mosquitoes and gnats. But the stuff is pretty expensive so I started looking around and found a solution. Make your own at a fairly cheap price. Heck, with this stuff and a sprayer you can even do your own pest control at home. :D

Here is a link on how to do it.

He likes to soak his but I use a spray bottle and just spray my clothes.

I was just thinking of shopping for some repellant for ticks & mosquitoes.
Looks like I may place an order for the 32oz bottle instead.

Thanks for the tip!!!!!!!!

Ticks give me the heebie jeebies, I've never seen any in my area but been told there are lots nearby, so I guess it won't be long before they find my woods.

Does the smell of these repellants have any adverse effect on deer?

Have found that wearing snake boots and tucking in the pants leg cuts way down on ticks and redbugs. People just look at you funny, but who gives a sh.

When working I use permethrin spray on my lower body sometimes, on the clothes only, but it is best to spay and let dry. The problem in Florida is that you always sweat to death and your clothes will be soaking wet within 15 minutes of leaving the truck. Once your clothes become wet, the permethrin comes in contact with your skin and then a small amount is absorbed. You can feel it in your system when that happens. Probably not good for you but neither are tick-borne diseases.

Permethrin sprays don't smell like deet sprays, but I don't ever put permethrin on my hunting clothes. Tons of ticks where i hunt and what I do is cut back the vegetation from trails going to my stands. I even take a yard rake and rake back the leaves from the trail. That way I don't get nearly as many ticks coming and going from the stand. I can also see the trail in the dark that way and can walk more quietly.

When i do get in a nest of small ticks or redbugs, i use dog shampoo that has permethrin in it. I am most certain that it is not healthy but it beats laying in bed itching and having the wife get mad because she found a tick.

You let it dry on your clothes. It is odorless when done correctly.

Here is a quote about permethrin use on humans:

According to the Connecticut Department of Public Health, permethrin "has low mammalian toxicity, is poorly absorbed through the skin and is rapidly inactivated by the body. Skin reactions have been uncommon."

If you have a tick crawling on you just take masking tape and pick it up with that and it makes for easy disposal.

I have lyme again. Guys spray away cause it isn't any fun.
Most doctors don't know their butt from a hole in the ground when it comes to lyme. Lyme can imitate many other problems and the doctors miss the boat way to often. Been there done that. I'll be safe from new ticks, for a year or so. Will be on the meds for a long time.
Usually 24 hrs. or less and a deer tick will not transmit the disease.
Problem is the ticks you see are not the problem. It's the ones you don't see.
Be safe.

Permithrin works great on ticks and a wide range of other creepy crawlies. You can buy the premixed stuff from Sawyers (@0.5% conc.) but you are paying a lot for the extra water. I buy the concentrated pest control chemical and mix it down yourself. Using a 1.25gal at 37.5% Permithrin which mixed to a similar concentration will about 94 Gal @ the 0.5%. The cost varies but the last bottle of Permithrin I purchased thru Amazon ran about $70 which translates to $0.75 per gallon.

As far as usage goes... I spray everything down the night before and let it dry. Once dry it has bonded with the fabric and will not come off even if soaked in a rain storm, sweat or swimming. It is rated to last through 6-8 washing cycles so it is pretty durable.

One word of warning for any of you that have cats. This stuff will mess them up when wet. Once dry your ok but the chemical affects their nervous system in a wet form.

If you have any questions pm me.

Rayman,

I really do not have to go on telling myself that. It is scientific fact.
BTW. The US military has been using it in 0.75 concentration for many years. If you were in the service you probably wore it as often as not.
