Re: Don't Forget Your Compass
I keep two compasses and two lights in my pack. There are some hunting or hiking accoutrements that one can get by without, especially in the daytime. When night falls, all bets are off!

I never go without my compass on it's lanyard around my neck, a bic lighter in my pocket and "AA" flashlight on my belt. I may get excited trailing a deer or moose and leave my pack behind. Hunting or fishing. 40 years ago ice fishing on Rondeau bay in a shanty. Fog rolled in and had to strain to hear the odd vehicle. Never again.

Just want to add an extra note to all of this since many on here love their electronics. Remember that if you do go to use a compass, keep it away from all electronics when you do a compass bearing. The electronic magnetic field that they create will interfere with a true reading with the compass and that will get you lost in a hurry.
Moose hunting one year in the Huntsville area, one hunter had a 2-way radio on a string around his neck and the compass had him walking almost 180* from the direction he wanted to go.

Daniel Boone was once asked by a reporter if he's ever been lost. His supposed answer was something like "No, but I got turned around for a couple of weeks a time or two"!!!
