100 ft. tape=cheap range finder. That gets you to 33 yrds. 'bout max range for me huntin'. Its in tool box allready. Cost "0". Poor ol' dumb carpenter has to save a few pennies here and there!
A damn tape is a lot cheaper, never under stood spending all that money to shoot 30 yards????
Wes
I agree with awshucks. It's a very good investment. Ever try to take a tape measure over a briar batch or a creek?
I can't tell you how many members have posted here having trouble with a scope and end up with a bad yardage marker at the range.
Stepping up hill or down will effect your stride . . .I practiced when I was 14 to be able to take 10 steps and it equal 10 yards. I also practiced sighting out yardage in increments of 10. I'm pretty good at both. However, I still use ny range finder.
The faster you shoot, the less important exact yardage becomes . . .but, really, get a range finder.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.
Perception trumps intention.

Thats what 11 yr. old boys are for! No child labor laws in the woods!
If you can't afford a range finder, borrow a friend that has a range finder and take him with you before the season and range and mark some spots then you are sure of the distances. That is what I did for a friend that didn't have a range finder and came to borrow my range finder. I told him him I would go with him and range the distances for him, sometimes this guy doesn't return things right away and I cannot afford to lose my stuff.
Thanks,
Raymond
Plastic tape or flags usually stand out wonderfully in bright light.
At dusk or predawn it's not worth a hoot. White is better. Paper towel or toilet paper is more friendly to the environment if it is discarded and in dim light is much, much more visible.
"Gun Control Laws"--trying to nag criminals into submission.
We spend ton's [tonnes]of $ on xbow, arrows, bheads, stands, clothing, ect.
It's only fair to the game we pursue to use a rf. I consider them a needed evil, paid about $130 for my Bushnell Yardage Pro. I use it before nearly every shot.
A rangefinder is a handy tool and I'll always have one now, but before that I killed most of my deer without one.
In the woods I relied on a combination of landmarks (trees, stumps, rocks) and flagging tape markers tied on limbs or bushes. In fields I would shove a few sticks in the ground to marks different yardages, sometimes with flagging tape on the sticks. All of the distances were paced off. Don't worry about scent contamination if you're setting things up before the season starts.
I also practiced (and still do) estimating distances while killing time in a stand. I do find its easier to estimate distance from an elevated stand that it is while sitting on the ground.
Now that I use a rangefinder (I don't range in the presence of deer, I range landmarks ahead of time) I still use flagging tape to mark spots where a handy landmark like a tree or stumps is not present.
Get yourself a rangefinder when the time comes you can afford one. In the mean time, stick to your marked distances and your within your skill level. Good luck and enjoy!

Good idea I told my son last week to take mine and go to the hunting spots he will hunt and mark the distances until he gets one.
I borrow a friends range finder and mark the trees with three different colored plastic squares, with one color representing 10 yards, another for 20 yards and the third color for 30yards.
Update..Santa got me a Nikon Riflehunter 1000. I've been out with it twice. Works great. Reviews are correct about it being hard to read in some light conditions, but have not experienced those in the field. Ranged a 6 point at 65 yards yesterday.
Yup range finders are certainly a good investment. I never have bought one mine is built in. I reckon after all the yrs i jus knowed by lookin at a deer if'en i can kill it. I am a 35 yds & under, seldom push passed that
