Heater for deer blind?

Post by Deaf jeff »

I realized this deer season that I am not nearly as comfortable sitting in a cold deer blind as I once was and decided that I will have a heater come next season. figured this forum would be a good place to get some idea's. I am thinking something I can hook up to a 20lb propane tank with a hose ran thru the wall of the blind and quiet/very low noise while burning. I don't want to rely on remembering to take a little 1lb tank whenever I need it. thanks in advance for any opinions

I have used a buddy heater which can be hooked up to a 20 lb bottle with $5 adapter and hose from Lowes/Home Depot/Walmart/etc. I have used a "big buddy" heater for larger areas as it has twice the btu power of the regular buddy heater and a battety powered fan to help circulate the heat. I have tried other heater such a powercat, but the buddy heater seems to do the job for me. Keep an eye out for sales in Jan as many stores try to reduce their heater inventory and you can sometimes get them at half price.

I have a Mr. Heater Buddy heater which is lightweight to carry in and out. It uses the small green propane tanks. It heat my deer blinds very well. That would be much easier than going through the trouble of running a hose through the wall. You can buy the small green tanks in bulk at SAMs or Costco

The Mr Buddy is a good heater, I use one occasionally. They make a kit you can refill small LP bottles from a larger bottle such as a grill bottle, might be more economical if you use it a lot, the little ones can get expensive.

Kegbelly,
Would the refill kit be sold at BPS or Academy or a certain store. Thanks letting me know that. I would definitely do that. Now that my 7 yr old goes with me a lot I use the mr. Heater more.

I bought mine at Wal Mart a few years ago. I think I've seen them at Academy too IIRC. Look in the section with the camping gear, lanterns, LP bottles etc. It was about $20 or so.

Harbor Freight has one on sale for 18.99 if there's a HF near you. Gander Mtn is on sale for 12.99.

BTW, if you're using a grill bottle like Blue Rhino where you just swap bottles, you're only getting about 80% of a full tank. That's how they keep the price down, you get less gas. I started getting mine refilled several years ago, little independent guy near me fills grill bottles for $15 and my 50# RV tanks are $30, and I get a FULL tank. It adds up over time.

I use the buddy heater also ,but i run a hose to it from a 20 lb tank outside the blind it makes very little noise and you don't have to keep changing the little bottles.

Remember as the temperture drops a 20 lber tends to be harder to get a good gas flow. Especially if it is left, out day in, day out. In my area minus 10 or lower is not uncommmon. Next to no gas flow at times is possible.
Therefore a warm 1lber is the best way to go. But also you may want to consider a
5 lber located inside the blind which will warm along with the interior and n8t take up much room.
Don, t know about your area but on a site like kijiji you may find a good coleman heater between now and next season

I talked my paralyzed buddy into a mount for his tank outside his blind.
Having seen what happens when a relief valve blows during my tank filling days there is no way he could escape a blaze following a great bang.
Bought a buddy heater only to promptly return it years back. The control knob was bound against the side of the unit and could not rebound itself when starting.
Now its a little catalytic on the one lb. tanks.
For many years I perched over a Coleman model 200 lantern to keep warm.
Still keep a couple, and one in wood box ready in the shed. :D
Box gets so hot ya need to sit on gloves or get up now and then!.

How do you keep the windows from fogging up? I run a little propane heater a few times a year but within a couple of minutes the windows are fogged solid. No way to see out . Kinda defeats the purpose. By the way, you can find sometimes find an old " bathroom " heater at a garage sale. Most were for natural gas but can be adjusted for propane. Works good and costs a couple of bucks.

JUST A WORD OF CAUTION! Be very careful of carbon monoxide poisoning, it can sneak up on you. If you are in a hard sided and maybe even a soft tent like blind,a carbon monoxide alarm might not be a bad investment. My girlfriend & I were overcome by it in our house and came very close to not making it out alive. Just something to consider.

Image it doesn't usually get below 15 degrees or so here in texas but I love this little heater in my sorta drafty tower stand I just always take a small bottle of propane in my backpack.the hose for a bigger tank is pretty reasonable too

heres a pic of what i use. its nice if you want to take a can of soup or make fresh coffee .it would be easy to mount it on a set of legs to connect a hose and 20 lb tank. you could also find an old bbq with a side burner and use that .and lots of those around free
i have in the past taken a soup can and poured a bottle of water in it and heated it then put the water back in the bottle and stuff it into my coat to help stay warm . yes i'm a redneck and hate to leave the bush lol

Coleman Black cat for us, we have two and use them often. Ice hut, tents, and occasionally in a blind.
They are safe in blinds tents and stuff, they warm decently and are cost effective if you refill your own 1 pound tanks. A no go in Canada by the way).
