Serratted Blade Broadheads?

Post by JUSTANUFF »

Just curious on opinions,,,more manufactuers seem to have developed broadheads with serrated blades,,,do you think that they offer any advantages over strait blades??
I personally think they do as far as out of the box sharpness,,ability to hold a sharp edge longer,,,I also believe more importantly,, that when they cut through tissue,,the rag-ed edge they leave makes it alot harder for a clot to to form,, and promotes more bleeding as a result.
Whats in your quiver??

I only use plain-edge broadheads. I think the serrated versions are more of a gimmick than anything. They would be much harder to sharpen. The jagged edge would provide more wound surface for clots to form without increasing the number of vessels transected. They do look pretty.

a surgeon doesn't use serratted edge, and he cuts just fine, I don't like them on a knife either.

I'd have to agree, IMO it's more of a marketing tactic to make you think 'wow that looks cool, it must be better'. Serrated edges are made more for a sawing motion than slicing--that's all the serrations are is little saw teeth. Plus they're a lot harder to sharpen. I don't know whether it's true or not but I've read where serrated blades have more drag on them when passing thru an animal. That said, I think on deer-size game either one works just fine, so I think it's more of a preference thing than anything.
edit... serrated blades have metal removed to create the serrations, so it stands to reason they would be somewhat weaker than the identical blade in a smooth cut. Probably not enough to be a concern though.

In a nutshell, straight edge for push cuts (pushing the cutting edge into the work) and serrated for slice cuts (dragging the the edge across the work). Both have their place and I wouldn't say one is better than the other as a general statement. Depends on the application.

Intersting debate,,,we all know whatever we use is gonna do the job,,,,Shot Placement is paramount nomatter the BH,I know its a personal preference,,,but what I have done is e-mailed Magnus,,,NAP,,,and Steel Force to get their comments,,,They seem to be the popular manufactuers that offer serrated,,,I will report later :!:

Well I have received two replies,,,Magnuss and NAP,,,the owner of Magnus actually called me and explained to me that there is a definite benefit with the serrated edge,,,they have been tested and it is definately not a gimmick,,they do more damage to the hide and tissue and open bigger entry and exit holes compared to thier strait edge cousins,,,increasing the blood loss and abilty to clot,,,,NAP pro staffer Chris Hunter is an avid bowhunter since 10 years old and always used strait edge,,,that pretty much all that was available in the market place,,,he not to long ago landed the job at NAP and tests all thier products,,,and after NAP offerd the serrated blades he said,,him and his serious friends and family uses nothing else,,,he uses the Spitfire Edge and it continualy amazed at the entry and exit holes and the massive bleeding and trauma they create,,,his tracking distances also have been considerably reduced
It is all a matter of personal preference based on our experiences,,kinda like the ever on going Ford vs Chevy vs Mopar debates..this was meant to be an informative post,,not dissin any products or people,,

Keep shootin strait

I will not be switching even if they were legal here.
Of course the company will stand behind their products.

The sharpest edge known to mankind is that of obsidian (flint) it is widely used is surgical edges for nerve surgery. The jagged/serrated edge cut heals better than a surgical straight edge.

One would need to check game laws where you would intend to use serrated broad heads, they are illegal in Ontario and some states do not allow them either.A number of years back there was a study that found that surgical straight edge out penetrated the serrated edge, at that time the places that banned them used this data.

I would feel comfortable using serrated broad heads on a thin skinned animal but would shy away from bigger game with them due to penetration capabilities.
