OT - Redneck Logging

Post by Species8472 »

So I went up to camp last weekend to do some work and to tweak my 35 Whelen prior to bear hunting.

Loaded the Whelen with 225 grain partitions at 2750 fps at about 3700 lb-ft.

Put 20 rounds down the pipe at ranges from 50-200 yards and was happy with the accuracy.

For a backstop I used a 10 inch diameter tree in front of a hill on the edge of one of the food plots. I knew the rounds would pass through the tree but did not worry about harming the tree as it was scheduled to come down because it is in the shooting lane of a new stand location.

I went back up today to cut the tree down and this is what I found:

Damage from the rounds plus a little wind must have did the job. Board with the targets was put there this afternoon so I could check my 7-08 prior to deer season - tree was down without any help from the 7-08.

Maybe thats what i need to do to the tree snag after the top jump on me. Doubtful my 22 would have that effect as the 35 Whelen.

My son-in-law has a .35 Whelen, and I like that round. I'd be careful with shot placement or you may not get a lot of meat to eat.

Those are some expensive bullets to use on tree cutting.Buy some hard cast to use like I use in my 45-70.

Believe it or not the stock on the gun is so well designed plus with a high end recoil pad I can shoot that gun more comfortably than my .270
