Nikon Bolt XR

Post by Wayne Wynn »

My 5 year old Excalibur scope is giving me fits! I never know when I look through it if it will be in focus ! it seems to have a mind of it's own.
I've been looking at the Nikon Bolt XR online . It looks like a nice scope with very good reviews. Does anyone use one on their Excal.?? They are set up from the factory for bows shooting 305 fps. My Exocet shoots 330 fps. Would I go by that number or would I have to chrono a few bolts from my setup? Nikon has a chart online to use for dialing in the scope once the arrow speed is determined.
Any input is appreciated, Wayne

It's a nice clear scope . On my Axiom I sighted it on at 20 yards and the next two circles were 29 and 38 yards. With your speed they might be like 32 and 42 yards. See for deer hunting they don't have to be dead on 20,30,40 ect. I'm having a hard time teaching my deer to stand on the right marks  If you get the Nikon I think you will be happy , just take some time and find out where your arrows hit and get them deer to stand there

It is a great scope as far as the optical clarity, it is not user friendly! You have to practice with it, then you'll be fine. I love mine, but did some trickery to get it where I wanted it. I would rather know I'm a bit high inside 30 yards, and so it is set 2" high there to be dead on at 50 yards. Now, most of my shots are around 30 yards, I like to set up well off the trails! It works well with that setting for my type of hunting. If you put in the time at the range, you will like it just fine. If you want pin point accuracy throughout the ranges, get a scope that will allow that type of calibrating. Next choice would be Redfield Revenge, or Crossbones from Leupold.

I just bought a Nikon Bolt three weeks ago. My biggest reason was for light gathering abilities during that last hour of legal time. I find the scope to be very clear and exceptionally bright. It is set up for a 400 grain arrow at 305 fps, so if you have a set up in that ballpark you are good to go.( this was a glove fit for my Axiom) As others have said, if your setup is outside those perimeters you will be using odd numbers for your marks outside of 20 yards. Shop around, the price for this scope is 159.00 but you can do a lot better.

I have this scope on my Equinox & bought one for my son's Vortex. I use the CB for hunting only & have the X-hairs set for 25 yards & use them for shots between 20/30 yards. For shots over 30 yards I use the 1st circle. This scope is light (10.1 oz), short, accurate and has a 3" to 4" eye relief. The scope is excellent in low light conditions. Example of accuracy.

Yep, I have not touched the scope since setting it up. It is very durable.
