String Twist

Post by flatone »

Is there any limit to the amount of twists you can put in a string to keep it 1/8" of the REDS on a 380?

I need to buy a new backup string anyway... but I must have 40 twists in that thing since last year and it still keeps creeping......

From what i hear bud they never stop creeping, I've got way over forty on some of my strings. That's what the stringing aid is all about and maintaining brace height..

I have the ADF on both of my Matrix and use custom strings from our string makers on this site. They stretch a lot less than the original strings from excalibur.

Danny Miller, who is Excalibur's string maker, does not have the luxury of time when he's making a string. A person who is making a string has the choice of making the string and putting it on a bow or putting in a jig to get some creep out of a string. Anyone knowing what Danny gets paid for each string he makes for Excalibur would understand that there's no time to put into getting the creep out of each string.
The more time the string is on a jig under tension, the less string creep the customer gets. Now consider that sometimes Danny has to ship a couple of thousand strings in a month. I don't see him having the time or facilities to make a creep free string.
Contrary to common belief, it is not the string material itself that makes a string elongate or not. A string is made from multiple strands, each strand is comprised from thousands of filaments. Each filament is surrounded by wax, each strand is surrounded by wax. Then you bundle the stands together and put them under tremendous tension, the wax begins to ooze out. That process is the main culprit of string creep.
A very simple and cheap jig can be made to get all or most of the creep out of the factory string. It takes days on a jig to make a string that will not elongate much.

My newest string hasn't had much creep at all. :D :D The string maker and that Force 10 had a lot to do with that. :D :D

Personally,I keep a quarter inch brace height on my M380. Secondly, don't set your brace height where you want it, set it at about a quarter inch higher. i.e. if you want it 1/8" off the bumpers set it at 3/8" off the bumpers. The preload will help speed up the process Boo described. You'll know you have too many twists when the string starts buckling up on itself.

As long as it doesn't snake all up on you, twist it up! Like Paul said, add a few extras, and it will be where you like it when ready to shoot.
