The Apprentice Scores

Post by Species8472 »

Took my youngest son out for his fourth hunt of this season. At age 12 he started scrimping and saving and 2 years later bought himself a used exocet off the classifieds in another forum. This is his last year as an apprentice. Next year he will have his own tags.

We got to the farm about 1:45pm and because the leaves are all still wet we decided to try a walk and stalk in the open hardwoods on the north side of the property. As we slowly made our way through the woods we found a scrape line around 3:30pm with 6 fresh scrapes and decided to hang out SE of the line as the wind was blowing from the NW.

We sat on the ground behind a massive downed beech tree that was the perfect height for a crossbow rest. At 4:07pm this nice doe came in and started checking out the scrapes. At 4:10 she presented a nice broadside shot at one of the scrapes about 25 yards upwind. My son took the shot and she did a nice donkey kick ran 55 yards and toppled in sight. We waited 20 minutes and this is what we found:

Home with the field dressed deer by 6:00 pm. 2 of 3 tags are now filled - one left to go but it will be kept until the end unless something irresistible presents.
