405 preformance???

Post by bowhunter1 »

Well guys I've been searching the forum but can't find any mention of the performance difference between the new modified raiser and limb set compared to the original raiser and limb set on the Mega 405? ( for those of us who have had an issue) With the new equipment is the draw weight still 290lbs? and does the speed remain the same??

the new design is not suppose to change speed but...my new riser with limbs didnt shoot up to speed. it also had a minor tiller issue. i contacted Excalibur and had new limbs sent. i kept track of the numbers on the limbs. i know there not suppose to mean anything but... the original limbs were marked 48 and the new ones are 54. i paid for speed and i got it!

I put together a new 380 using a modified 405 riser and a new set of in house limbs and a standard length stock 380 rail.... My numbers are aprox 5 fps slower than reported by stock 380's with comparable arrow weights...

I'm fine with that  as they are still way above my Matrix 355 with arrows in the 400-420 grain range. Coming in at or slightly above 355 fps. :D
I feel with the modified riser and new in house limbs.. my confidence level in this bow is "over the top".

Dam it... well here I go again... I had a limb split on my Mega 405 and no big deal Excalibur will take care of me.. And yes they did!!! BUT with the new raiser design and new limbs on my Mega 405 in approx. 80 shots the left limb is now developing several (meaning more than a 12) horizontal line on the inside face of the limb that can be felt.. this is the exact thing I noticed on my old limb before it splintered.. And the right limb has a section of fiberglass near the top that has splintered as well.. Peter said he will personally send me a new set of limbs.. Hope they arrive soon I really need to put shots down range to prepare for the season.. Many shots.. And I want to work this thing out to make sure this problem will not resurface.. At the REAL WRONG TIME.

Don't worry about those cosmetic lines or horizontal as you call it. They are purely cosmetic from the hand making process and can often show up later, much later due to the long cure process.

I might have believed the lines were cosmetic if I didn't have a set of limbs that have already failed.... and right before they did I noticed the exact same (cosmetic) issues. And on the right limb as I have stated the fiberglass has splintered to the point it will poke your finger and has left a small divot in the top inside face of the limb.

I believe what Norm is trying to explain to you that all limbs can show the horizontal imperfections you are talking about, most limbs have them good or bad. So this would be normal for any limb even the good limbs that don't fail have the same characteristics, in other words, it is like saying my Realtree Xtra limbs failed and these are the same camo so I am afraid they will fail too,,,,,,

I highly recommend you cock the bow overnight 8 to 12 hours every night for a week, two weeks whatever, same as you would in a hunting season. I think this helps equalize the limbs and condition them, but even if I am wrong, it will dam sure boost yer confidence in you limbs, and at the same time if the limbs have a likely failure coming, I would expect this to show it. I had over 120 hours combined cock time on my 405 limbs and never a problem in all the shots I had on mine. I was totally confident in them, but when Excalibur made it disappear it sure don't help boost confidence to others,,,,,,,

to do the cocking thing to check limbs is no given on the life of the limbs. may help to stretch the strings but limbs can fail after after a few or a hundred. when its time its time.

I really appreciate what you guys are saying about the cosmetic aspect of the horizontal line on the inside face of the left limb, but I noticed those (cosmetic) lines right before my other limb shattered.... and they were Not there when I first received them as a replacement and started shooting.. And then there is the right side where the fiberglass has started to chip in layers away from the top edge. (only one layer has chipped off so far and the chip leads to one of those cosmetic horizontal lines.)

Splinters happen and what you're referring to would be enough for me to ship them back for replacement, so that's what I would do if I was you. Not so much for peace of mind, your bow is probably fine, but because you can...that's why you bought a bow with a lifetime warranty. So either deal with it's the splinter or send them in for new ones. But you can trust that the new limbs will hold up, I've tested mine a lot like Wilcatter has but on a custom Matrix 410 and it's showing no sign of problems.

The "custom" is a re-machined mainframe that is either shorter or longer than the stock mainframe. A 410 or 420 mainframe has a longer power stroke than that of the factory 405.

Hey Norm, is it possible for me to get the parts needed to build a custom 410 or 420?

Thanks Scott
