Hawke XB30 past 70 yards?

Post by gtj »

Hey All,

I have a Hawke XB30 on a M380.
Off the bench shooting I get excellent POI at 10 yards to 70 yards with a 20 yard zero.
Once at 80 yards the POI is considerably off being consistently 1.5" right and approximately 3" high.
Any ideas or comments appreciated.

Thanks,
Glenn

Are you using Hawke's balistic app?

I have a Grizzly and I shoot mine at 100 yards just for fun. My groups are at least good enough to stay within the parameters of my 16"x16" Block target.

Try getting more picky with leveling your scope (your using the mainframe for your level right?) and fine tune your horizontal at 80.

Yes, I agree with Boo, level your crosshair perfectly and adjust your scope one click down.
Also, keep in mind that any, even a very small amount of wind could cause that 1 1/2" shift at 80 yards.

Yep Boo and Normous I think hit the nail on the head. I use a plumb bob at 30 yards with a level on my riser and set the reticle to the plumb line.

As for wind it don't take much 5mph will cause what Normous is telling you, the lighter the arrow, bigger the vanes, the more you can expect. Out past 50 is when every little detail becomes a major impact!!

How heavy of an arrow are you shooting ?
Wind drift will affect any arrow at those ranges but not quite as noticeable with a heavier arrow. :)
I'm shooting 421grs out of my 350LE & wind drift is definitely noticeable past 70yds. :?

Thanks for all the responses there fellas.

I did the plumb line idea at the target and used the crosshairs to line up, double checked with my bubble level on the riser. Picked a perfectly calm early evening.

Off the bench, I got perfect horizontal POI just 1" high off a 1" diameter center aiming point. Actually hit the same hole twice.

Happy..happy.

Now onto 90 and 100 yards and see what happens.

Thanks Again

With a 20 centre on my 400 BullDog it hits dead on 20-30-40-50-60 at 70-80-90-100 it is exactly 3" low at all those ranges.

I wouldn't worry about zero for hunting past 60, but if it was me and wanted to gain some of that 3" at longer range, without changing my other aiming points more than 1 yard, I would use the speed dial to get within 1" low at 80 yards, by doing this 40 would only change by an 1" high whitch is about dead on at 41 yards

20 yards would be unchanged, 30 yards would be fractions

50 and 60 would not change more than an 1" and that is less than 1 yard.

I set mine up with a 30 yard zero, gives me a dead on hold out to 35 with one aiming point in my 380

Then I adjust fer 50 yards on the speed setting, then to 70 and fine tune it there for dead on when I am done all my yardages are on for within one yard at every 10 yard interval. I am shooting 455 grain arrows at 345 fps, anything within 6 to 10 fps of that would be very close to the same results.

How I fix the 3" gap is by using the number not the arrow above. So at 80 all I have to do is put the 80 where I want to hit and it's bang on. I prefer the pinpoint zero on the 20-30-40-50-60 end as that is where I'll be using it on the meat shots. Foam I'm not as concerned about. If I was going to be shooting all day at 70 plus or hunting some critter I could not get close to then I'd go route you suggested and up the speed dial some. That said, putting the 100 on the dot I wanted last week gave me several 3" 3 shot groups so I can't complain about it.

You received very good advice, Just want to add that. Past 70 yards 1 or 2 yards will significantly impact your POI . Be sure to have the right distance.

Good advice, and really wash yardage wise, 75-80 yards ia a 12" drop,, 40-45 yards ia less than a 5" drop.

makes 1" at 40 yards approx. a one difference,,, or 3" three inches nearly a 1 yard error at that distance.

The big difference is misses can add up much faster past 50 yards when you misjudge it. Like Hunt it said, most of us are not going to be taking that gamble out past 50 or 60 yards for seasoned shooters. but your right, none of it matters if you know your weapon, and have pinpoint range declaration!
