Totally new to this need help!

Post by McGeectv »

Hey everyone, My uncle recently passed away and he left his Matrix 380 for me. I'm used to shooting a Mathews compound bow and just want a little help figuring out broadheads, field points and everything I need to make the most of this. The bow has the tact zone scope(for fps or Xbow), and Rage crossbow X broadheads(not sure what grain weight). I want to get an idea on how to maximize the distance from 20-60 yards as the scope limits me, and what I can do to quiet this xbow down or if I need to.

The field points line up perfectly with the range settings on the scope, I'm not sure if the tact zone has different models for different grain weights or if its standard is 150 grains. I'm blown away by the accuracy of this weapon, from 20-50 I cant aim for the same point without messing the bolts up. I swear by Muzzy for compounds because of accuracy and may stick with them in the weight needed for the xbow. I also find the Xbow to be rather loud, should I throw some limb savers on or will the 380 fps reach deer fast enough?

My uncle was a big influence on me in this regard, he was there the first time I shot a bow and the first time I went hunting. Because of that I want to make sure I am VERY efficient with this weapon.

Id appreciate any help or pointers from anyone.

Welcome to the Forum.

First off let me say your a lucky man to have had an uncle who thought you deserving of such a great crossbow... Your taczone is adjustable to any weight broadhead as it is speed adjustable and the speed of a recurve crossbow made by Excalibur is determined buy its draw length and the weight of the projectile.

Your choice of Muzzy's will work just fine with the 380 but I would recomend a minimum arrow weight near or slightly above 400 grains for best flight, performance and penetration... Also, FOC is important when shooting these short projectiles... To accomplish this many of us use brass inserts up front weighing between 92 and 110 grains .... This weight, along with a broadhead of 100 - 150 grains will give you all of the FOC your looking for.

As far as making your X bow as quiet as your verticle one, good luck... They were never designed to be very quiet, but luckily a deer won't hear it in most cases until the arrow has already done it's job.

There is loads of good info here on this forum and many people on this site more than willing to help with any of your questions...

I would encourage you to watch some of the videos in the sidebar that Excalibur has posted up showing the safe care and maintance of your new bow... Then start asking your questions as they arrise.

....you should complete your registration letting the crew know where you hail from...for the previously mentioned reasons....

....just curious, your uncle wasn't a member of this fraternity was he?

I'm from the US gotta fix the profile. Thanks for the insight on the scope. I don't know if he was or not, it wouldn't suprise me though. He knew heck of a lot more about this stuff than I do.

You are about two hours from me. If you want to get together at a nice range in Indiana, I could meet you there and get you all dialed in. You would need to bring your crossbow only, I'll have everything else.
