What's your favourite?
With hunting season fast approaching us I'd like to know what is your favourite hunting knife? Do you like one knife does all or you like separate knives to do different field dressing tasks?
We all have our favourite xbow, bolts, broadhead, truck etc.

I like to carry one of 3 knives. In no special order is a Benchmade Bone Collector and 2 custom knives. One custom knife is made by Dagriz and the other is by Jamie McGowan.
If I have to de-bone a deer, I bring 2 yellow handled Henkles one with a flexible blade and one with some backbone.

One knife never does it all, but my Case XX Changer comes close enough for me.

Most everything is done with one blade, but I have used the saw and gut hook on occasion. The saw is not great for major tree surgery, but for a thick pelvic bone on a big buck it'll get the job done. Its also nice to have a second sharp blade available for those mornings in Northern Virginia when the arrows (or bullets) are flying early and often.

Thanks for posting.
I have an old but trusty hunting knife probably 40 years old looking for one to replace it. Haven't figure out which to get?

I've used a DPX HEST for years to gut deer.. This little knife maintains an edge so easily.. I've gutted over 10 deer with this blade and all I need to do is wash it off and dry it.. Then a few minutes on a leather strop with some green compound and it is back to hair popping sharp....

For more serious work I like to carry my Laser Strike by ESSE... for those days and nights where it just might be a long night in the woods and have to make do until sunrise...

Old Timer Knives are very sharp and hold edge ..They look like a hunting knife not like those high tech things you see..They fold up and go in your pocket ..ihunt wrote:Thanks for posting.I have an old but trusty hunting knife probably 40 years old looking for one to replace it. I have and carry a custom 3" Damascus Drop Point with Big Horn Scales, built by "Journeyman Smith" Doug Campbell of Montana.
I alternate it with a Custom 3" Drop point built by Ed Schempp who also designs knives for Spyderco and just happens to be my cousin.
Along with either of those is a 3 1/2" lockback folding "Bowie" which is constantly hooked inside of my right front pocket..... This beauty was designed by Ed Schempp for and built by Spyderco.
( I'm sorry I have no way of posting pictures using my tablet as both Custom Drop Points are truly beautiful and "one off" knives.

I use a Havalon. When the blade gets dull remove it and replace it. They are surgical steel blades, scary sharp and durable...
A touch of frost has heightened your awareness and your heart steadily beats in anticipation. Your senses are suddenly alert to the movement on the forest floor and you realize that the moment of truth is at hand.
Re: What's your favourite?
I just bought one on a whim to try out this year. I cant believe how sharp and light that sucker is. I hate setting down my benchmades when field dressing and looking for 10 min to find it. The havalon i got is lime greenbellerivercrossbowhunter wrote:I use a Havalon. When the blade gets dull remove it and replace it. They are surgical steel blades, scary sharp and durable...

But this is my favorite knive...it never leaves my pocket. The S30V keeps a useable edge a long time.

This or my benchmade 940 usually does the field dressing.
i have a cheap buck fixed blade i use to whack off legs and the cut through the neck.
Then back to one of the above for skinning. This year im goin to try just the Havalon Bolt.

Re: What's your favourite?
Sorry no photo. But my favorite to carry in the woods is a gift I got for being in a buddy's wedding. His dad is pastor at a church next to a marine base in south carolina. So they gave us kabar knives from the base.
