Cost of one shot

Post by bill1111 »

Are most arrows lost?
If so stump shooting is a thing of the past.
Small game?
Or is this just big game sport?
Just want to know

I would say most bolts are found after a shot. Using an illuminated nock helps in that regard.

You can use the same bolt for multiple deer, but you can also bust a bolt on a single deer. It depends on the quality of the carbon and what actually occurs during the shot.

A fair number of people use crossbows for turkeys. I'm playing around with the idea of fletching flu flu bolts and turning the Bulldog into a retriever and hunting geese using a bird tip. You can certainly hunt coyotes with a crossbow and some shoot squirrels.

I go stumpin' in the spring when I'm looking for sheds and it's more fun for me carrying a 13 ounce traditional bow than a seven pound crossbow, but you could shoot stumps. The scope would help you assess the density of the target, which would be a benefit. I'm not a fan of blunt tips and prefer judo points because of the springlike deceleration they give and the wire arms help prevent it from digging into the ground.

If I was looking to hunt small game and go stumping with a crossbow, I would check out the Micro 315.

My advice is shooting stumps with a cross bow will get expensive fast.

I don't have a problem using firenock lighted nocks, and judo points,, like was said they are easier on the shafts than blunt points. Seldom do I loose an arrow.

I shoot an Equinox and have a crank for it so i do shoot it at 3D shoots but never at stumps and such. Hunting wise for me the x bow is all about large game , this includes turkey for me.
I have had my bow a long time i do not use it for small game i have better stuff for that, when bow deer season is open I grab the excal if i want to hunt small game I use a different tool, I do not mix hunts and take pot shots at squirrels ect when deer hunting.
That said i have a small game bolt I carry but really never use , a field point with a washer behind it.
I recover most of my shot bolts at deer and i use a lighted nock , the lighted nock on short shots is more for bolt recovery as it is over before I see the bolt in flight . But past 20 say yards the lighted nock is helpful on shot placement and bolt recovery.
Hope this helps.
