Phoenix suddenly shooting to the right.

Post by JimG »

Excalibur Phoenix
Open sights ( have not moved at all)
Firebolts with 150 gr field points
All bolts on bow are tight
No splinters on limbs

Has shot to the same POI for the last 4 years. Last week practicing for upcoming deer season, buddy said that my third to last shot sounded "different" but he could not elaborate. The last two shots went right of the intended target by a few inches. Target was at 20 yards. Last shot was not only right but high as well. Fast forward to today. All shots are either right and/or high at 35 yards. I have been shooting from a bench today to help eliminate me as a factor. Any clues on what may have happened?

You do not indicate that your POI change to be erratic and that may lead me to think that your front or rear sight may have been bumped slightly and may need a readjustment. Have you checked the two trigger unit screws?
If you are using a rope cocker, are the hooks held against the mainframe during the entire upward travel motion? this is very important for consistent accuracy.

Hooks are tight to the sides of the mainframe when cocking. Just pulled the stock and the two screws holding trigger unit to mainframe are tight. Trust me when I say the front and rear sight have NOT moved. Just check the limbs again for splinters. There is none. This has really got me puzzled.

Shoot one arrow with the same vane down everytime. If your problem goes away, try shooting with different cock vanes and check your other arrows the same way.

That happened today on my new Zombie arrows .5 shot in same holes UNREAL as group then one shot off to right .Turned vane like you said and UNREAL arrow went in same hole as the others grouped ...So i put red mark on that vane to use it and not cock vane.My gt arrows .005 were worst and had to turn 3 vanes out of 6 arrows..

Check the 4 small screws that hold you scope mount on.

If it was a sudden change like you say, and everything is proven to be tight, I would have to say its the limbs, tiller is where I would look first, at rest and cocked. If everything is equal,, are the dissipator pads still there and bars tight, is the serving still good,, if the brace height is on the string has to still be in good shape, But if everything checks good, and it is hitting in the same place I would adjust and go with it, thinking somehow the sights have had to move??

As mentioned, if all fasteners are tight then check your tiller. You won't notice much with your tiller being out until you shoot broadheads. They will really pronounce 'off tiller' limbs. The other possibility is your arrow. If it's consistently the same arrow that's out it may be damaged or the spine may have broken. This isn't as common but arrows will eventually fatigue and surrender their spine.

Update-

I have checked every single fastener on the bow. Nothing was loose. Brace height gets checked every time I shoot so that was not it. No scope to lose zero as I use Excals open sights. I could find NOTHING wrong. Even tried one of my spare strings. Got the same result, POI was to the right. Same as yesterday and last week. So on to the Firebolts. I have never bothered to load a bolt so that a particular vane was the same way every time. Just cock, load and shoot. So today I marked one vane on each bolt. There was no change at all no matter how I shot the bolts, marked vane down, left, or right. I also shot broadheads. The Boltcutters went exactly where the field points went. Also made darn sure I was cocking the bow properly. Darn thing is stacking bolts at 35 yards. Sooooooooo.....................I bit the bullet and adjusted the front sight. I have no explanation as to why suddenly the POI changed the way it did. Will probably never know.
