Taking The Plung!

Post by Suppressor »

After nearly 20 years of sitting on the side line of this Forum I have taken the time to sign up! First I would like to say Thanks to all the members past and present for your impute and photo's over the years.I have been crossbow hunting since the early70's with the $75.00 purchase of a new Daco Hornet 150lb crossbow with wood bolts 2 and 3 blade swagged on broad heads. Finding a straight one in the store bucket was a chore. It took me nearly 7 years to take my first deer with it.However some of my best and memorable hunts have take place with that bow. Then in the mid 90's I was given a Daco Scorpion Relayer serial #415 crossbow from a fellow I worked with that had been given the bow from Bill T. for using his machine shop to produce the first Relayer trigger mechanisms. The Hornet began to collect dust as the Relayer began it to fill the freezer each year after. Then in around 2005 I bought a new Excalibur ExoMax and that was a real game changer as it was like hitting a deer with a bolt of lightning! In the year 2007 compound vertical bows were reaching speeds of 350fps. and i bought my very first compound bow a PSE X-Force.So after many lost and broken arrows I became good enough to take deer and turkeys with that.As the deer number declined in my hunting area I would start out the deer season using the compound bow and switch to my crossbow as the season neared the end always with positive results. I woke up one day last week and said to myself I haven't bought a new bow in 10 years and am now the proud owner of a Excalibur Micro Suppressor crossbow.I spent the entire afternoon today shooting all the previously stated bows from the oldest to the newest and all I can say is the Micro Suppressor was the icing on the cake! This is one sweet shooting bow. Thank you Excalibur past and present for making the finest shooting crossbows on the planet earth! Terry=>>>============>

Thanks so much! Ive been at this game longer than I care to imagine. The changes that have taken place over the past 45 years of my hunting with bows has been great for the hunter and not so great for the game we pursue!

Welcome to the forum Terry, and thanks for the great introduction. I had the opportunity to shoot forum member Tom's old Daco at last year's Boofest. All I can say is you're a much better hunter and shooter than me just for hitting what you aimed at with that! I certainly came aboard late in the game and have been spoiled by only having sweet shooting bows to contend with. Again, welcome aboard.

Thanks for the kind words Paul.
Hitting a stationary target took enough practice.Whenever I showed pictures of deer I had taken with the older bows to my hunting buddies they would say "Why did you shoot em in the a$$"? All I could ever say was that was not where I was aiming they would jump the string! That made for long tracking jobs.
I'm glad those days are a thing of the past as my legs are not the same anymore and it wasn't fair to the deer.A properly placed arrow with today's modern equipment recovery has mostly been under 100yrds.

Suppressor, your Daco Scorpion Relayer serial #415 , is it a Astro Daco Scorpion with a Bill T conversion trigger installed. If so, that is real collectors item. If I remember correctly, Bill told me that he only made 300 conversion triggers.

Yes, as Paul stated, the Daco bows are a pain to shoot, but they were the best bow at the time. The triggr pull on a scropion was 12lbs as well as needing to push in a safety button when you pull the trigger. A good average grouping for 30 yards would be 5-6 inchs.

After Bill T made the trigger conversion available, the group size dropped to about 1-2 inches.
