OT: A Fine & Proper SCARE!
Ran back in from the offshore a couple days back now - medical emergency.
There is very little that concerns me as much as my vision, and in this case my right eye simply shut down over a matter of a few hours. As in BLIND!
Scrambled to Emergency day before yesterday. Scheduled immediate appointment next morning with a Specialist in Nanaimo (a little better than an hour away)...
Bullous Retinal Detachment are words no-one wants to hear..
Went immediately from Specialist (Nanaimo) to head of optic surgery at Jubilee Hospital in Victoria - another hour & 1/2 further - who pronounced the case "too technical" for him to take on, to a fellow suggested as "The Best" Western Canada has to offer in whirlwind yesterday. Last fellow described in detail the impending surgery. A 25 & 1/2 on a scale of 10 in the Spooky Factor...
Now home, gathering items for extended stay back in Victoria, and a blessing from my personal SawBones to undergo emergency surgery...
Thursday earliest for Slice & Dice Show.
Wish me Luck!!
Hoping beyond hope they can find a way to save my shooting eye...
Freaked,
Matt

Eyesight is a scary business but medical technology has come a long ways in a short time. I wish you the best and hope that you get 20/20 vision back again.

My shooting eye has been insulted by two corneal transplants. Then I had surgery to remove a film that had formed over the retina. My ophthalmologist now tells me that I need another corneal transplant for my right eye. Hopefully it won't reform another film over the retina after that transplant.
There are three things in particular for which I am grateful. First of all, to the families who allowed tissue donation when they lost a loved one. I would now be blind but for their generosity at a time of intense tragedy. Secondly, I am grateful to the skill and kind care I have had at the hands of the medical profession--surgeons and nurses. Thirdly, I am grateful there are no nerve endings in the eyeball. There's no eye pain. Keeping still during the healing process involves muscle discomfort, but it's not that bad. Boredom may be the hardest element to bear.
It sounds as though you did everything correctly that can now be done. I judge you to be an intelligent and sensible person. Follow your doctor's advice, and be almost to the point of being obsessive about it. Little things DO COUNT in the healing process.
You have my best wishes for a complete and quick recovery.

Well methinks you'd be amongst the few that do then!Hi5 wrote:... I judge you to be an intelligent and sensible person...
All kidding aside, I consider my eyesight to be pretty much my most important sense, and so I will indeed be adhering to the SawBones' orders to a tee!
In keeping with the way things are going, my own Doc is out of town until Friday. Had to hit up the local walk-in clinic to get the sign-off on pre-surgery physical. Of course that wait was literally hours, but now accomplished.
My truck was acting up so bad on the extraction from the North Island that I won't take the chance on running it down to Vic & back. And, of course my Lady's car decided to develop tranny issues while I was away. Budget used to be our only car rental place in town, and in keeping with the trend, they were OUT of rental vehicles (unless we wanted a 5 ton truck) until the weekend. Sheesh!!
Thankfully a turn-around in that department and a local dealer had mercy on us and rented us a machine for the run!!
I'll take that last as a sign things might be turning around. That, and the walk-in SawBones informing me the surgeon that will be looking after me actually is the one giving lectures on these types of procedures when he tours Europe and NA. Does indeed sound like The Best of Hands to be in...
Many Thanks for the well wishes folks! They are greatly appreciated!!
Few more items to pack, a bit more pacing to do, and then we'll be off to see what transpires...
Hoping...
Nog

Got my fingers crossed for you but I don't think you need it. Success rate is high for surgery but the sooner the better.
