Hanging Stand and Wind

Post by ko4nrbs »

Ok guys I need some help understanding how best to play the wind when hanging my tree stand alongside a wood lot/corn field. How do you all decide on where to hang your stand based on wind direction?

I have to ask if you know where they are heading when coming in from nighttime eating? One farm edge I hunt East of a bean field in the morning about 300 yards from the edge, winds are usually from the west there, if there’s a southwest wind in the morning, I would call off work. I usually like the wind in my face and use scents that way too. If you can get near a corner or a pinch, do that, or an emergency trail. You will get a shot, any deer taken from public land is a trophy especially later in the season after their refresher training.
The Kid asked me last week over a cold one when do I think I’m going to stop hunting. I said the short as answer was, I don’t think I’m driving that bus. But I can say this for sure, when it’s no longer fun, or I think I’ll never learn anything more, I’m finished.

The bedding area is on the south side of the cornfield alongside a slough and Limestone Bay. It's the only good cover there and I found quite a few droppings there. They are protected there by the dense cover and water on two sides.

I must add that stands must be removed after each day's hunt in the refuge. Complicates the issue to say the least.

Lock up a climber out there, and get there early!
Good luck Bill.

That is my plan. I'll be hunting from dark to dark so really not worried about leaving the stand. I will be up in the tree at least an hour before sunrise. I'll use the Windfinder Map to check the wind's direction for the days I plan to hunt. I don't want to run the deer out of here. A Southerly wind is ideal. Keeps me scent out of the bedding area.

Check the app but don't trust it to always be correct. I always verify the actual wind direction when I get to my hunting area. Thermals do weird things to wind directions.

Yea I understand it has to be verified once in the area. Winds can do very strange things.

After much research and scouting my original plan doesn't seem to be the best for mornings. If I cross the corn field to get to my stand it is very likely I will spook the deer that still may be feeding on the corn. So much to consider!! The water really limits where you can travel, and the deer know it. May have to put outriggers on my Jet Sled.

All this standing water and flowing creeks, etc. plays havoc with figuring out how the thermals will affect the wind currents. I sure have a lot to learn about this area.

If its an option, coming in by water is sometimes the best way to get into some prime locations with the least amount of disturbance. That's especially true if you're sneaking in between the food and the bedding area while the deer are 'away from the house'.

One place I've hunted in Arkansas is about a mile walk across public lands from where a truck can park. But we come in by boat and can climb a tree almost in bow range of the boat.

Had a great spot in NE Oklahoma alongside a creek that was right off a river. Was literally a stone's throw to my stand from the boat. Killed several deer there over the years. Sometimes two in one day. The river was dangerous to navigate in the dark, so I camped in my boat.

Unfortunately, my new spot here in Northern Alabama is not accessible by boat. The sloughs are way too shallow. In periods of high water, a Kayak may be able to get in but during hunting season the water is down unless it rains a lot.
