On average, I see more deer in the evening than in the morning, but I like mornings much better. We can hunt until 1/2 hour after sunset, but I usually get down around sunset if there doesn't seem to be any deer or turkeys around. We have a 4 points on one side rule and counting points becomes extremely difficult the darker it gets. I have passed on so many bucks that looked mature, but it was too dark to be sure they were legal. Another problem is that spike bucks can look a lot like does in fading light. Then there is the problem of tracking a deer in the dark in order to beat the coyotes to it.

I have done something like you did once. I was getting down at sunset and on my way down I saw that three bucks had entered the field in front of my stand. I just waited until they walked off so as not to spook them on visiting that area.

That buck has some tall tines and I hope you get another crack at him!

My family growing up didn't have a lot of money my dad was a car mechanic mom was a stay at home mom only worked part time at night.
What we didn't have in wealth we made up with lots of love.

My mom had lots of sayings one was...Joseph all girls are the same when you turn um upside down find on that's right...anyway you need a mother not a wife.
And this one..You guys work and save for your own "dam" wedding ...it will help keep you married longer using your own money!!!
I loved my mom she was so realistic and cooked good too!

That's certainly true. Were I hunt they have an early doe only season. I climb down at sunset because it's practically impossible to see short spikes in low light. Where I hunt, any hard bone above the hairline is a legal buck.

Here's one that my daughter had to put a buck tag on during muzzleloader season many years ago. She said it looked like a doe, but it "acted like a buck" so she had her suspicions. Fortunately she had tags for either, but really wanted a doe. When we got to it, we thought it was a doe until I noticed his plumbing. Then we turned the head around it looked like he had a couple ticks on his head. A couple pencil erasers above the hairline.

We've let many a young doe walk because we couldn't be 100% positive it wasn't sporting a rack like this one.
