Toronto Police ask Trudeau to fix bail and justice system amid crime wave

Add the Toronto Police Chief and the head of the Police Services Board to the list of people asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reform Canada bail and justice system. Chief Myron Demkiw and board chair Ainsworth Morgan wrote a letter to Trudeau adding their names to the calls for bail reform while also asking for other specific changes to the criminal code around gun crime.

Pierre Poilievre Is Going On The Offensive Against Justin Trudeau On Firearms Issues

The good thing to come out of the O’Toole era of the Conservative Party is that the current CPC leader, Pierre Poilievre, has seemed to have learned the right lessons. Poilievre has taken a strong stand in favour of firearms rights while also expanding the image of what responsible gun ownership looks like.

Whereas Scheer would often protect responsible firearm ownership in Canada in an abstract way, Poilievre is extremely specific and personal in how he talks about the issue.

Poilievre makes statements in Parliamentary Question Period like “Why won’t they go after criminals instead of targeting Grandpa Joe’s hunting rifle in Cape Breton?” and highlight that Trudeau’s Liberals are trying to take guns away from rural Canadians, First Nations, and Canadians’ law-abiding family members.

The National Telegraph reached out to the Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights (CCFR) to get their reading on how Poilievre is doing on the issue of firearms.

CCFR’s VP of Public Relations Tracey Wilson agreed that the CPC strategy on guns had greatly improved, stating that:

Since 2015, the Liberals have weaponized the gun debate in Canada, inciting fear among average people and manipulating tragedies for their benefit. We saw in the 2021 election how Trudeau used the threat of “putting assault weapons in our streets” against former CPC leader Erin O’Toole. This is so false and hyperbolic that it’s shocking, but worked perfectly as he intended. He consistently had O’Toole up against the ropes, trying to defend the simple truth that legal gun owners don’t represent a disproportionate risk to public safety.

The new CPC leader, Pierre Poilievre takes a very different approach. Rather than holding a defensive position against these attacks, he’s openly and aggressively on the offensive on this file. In the weeks leading up to the Christmas break at the House, more times than not Poilievre would open QP with questions slamming the Liberal leader for his targeting of legal gun owners, soft-on crime policies, and rising gang crime and violence, despite 3 gun bans in 3 years.

Wilson also pointed out the absurdity of letting the Liberals take the initiative on the issue of firearm, noting:

The Liberal record speaks for itself with a 92% increase in gang crime and an overall 32% increase in violent crime. We see Poilievre reaching out and meeting with stakeholders like hunters, target shooters and northern and indigenous communities. Videos, events and social media posts are plentiful and bring awareness to this issue for Canadians who’ve been lied to for so long.

The gun debate in Canada shouldn’t be a wedge issue. Canada has one of the strictest gun control regimes in the world, and for the most part, it works. I think Canadians recognize the truth – we need leadership that will focus on reducing actual crime, violence and gun smuggling.

Wilson ended off her comments to TNT, noting that Poilievre is currently delivering the type of leadership that the CCFR is looking for.

Gun control bill is a 'delicate conversation' house leader claims

Conservative and New Democrat MPs oppose the amended Bill C-21. A majority of the public safety committee last December 13 voted to block attempts to speed passage of the bill and instead proposed a series of cross-country public hearings this spring.

New Democrat MP Alistair MacGregor (Cowichan-Malahat, BC) said initial support for Bill C-21 had evaporated due to cabinet’s amendment to broaden its scope. “Some members of my caucus had not received one single piece of correspondence until this amendment dropped and now it’s making up half their correspondence,” said MacGregor.

“In politics as in life trust is easily broken but it’s extremely hard to repair,” said MacGregor. “The way this amendment landed has frankly been a complete and total abuse of process.”

You could definitely see this coming: Ottawa wants to waste taxpayers’ money taking away hunting rifles and shotguns.

The federal government initially said that its gun ban and buyback “has no intention — no intention whatsoever — to go after long guns and hunting rifles.”

Now a federal briefing note admits what you knew all along. According to documents obtained by Blacklock’s Reporter, this briefing note says that the new federal gun ban “may reduce the number of firearms some hunters use.”

Initially the Parliamentary Budget Officer estimated that Ottawa’s gun buyback was going to cost up to $756 million. Now, with the government adding hundreds of guns to the list, criminologist Gary Mauser estimates it could cost upwards of another billion dollars.

The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security is still debating the buyback.

New Democrat committee member Alistair MacGregor said the Liberals were acting in bad faith with the way they introduced the newest amendments to the legislation. He said he’s waiting to hear from Canadians before he makes a judgement.

All 13 Premiers of Canada give Trudeau a wakeup call

It might be hard for the ill to get treatment, foreigners to get a visa, kids to get the right education, households to get inexpensive groceries, people to get not-so-pricey houses but what’s easy to get in Canada is a bail to a serial offender. People with significant criminal records under their names are wandering on Canada’s streets repeating criminal offences as they enjoy the leniency of the bail law in their country.

The leaders of Canada’s provinces and territories are pressuring Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to take bail reforms seriously, particularly when it comes to specific crimes involving weapons.

The 13 premiers wrote to Trudeau on January 13 requesting a particular reform that would make bail more difficult for persons facing charges connected to the crime of possessing a loaded, illegal, or restricted firearm. They want a review of further crimes involving weapons.

“There have been a growing number of calls for changes to prevent accused persons, who are out on bail, from committing further criminal acts,” reads the letter. “The justice system fundamentally needs to keep anyone who poses a threat to public safety off the streets.”

The president of the Police Services Board and the Toronto Police Chief have both petitioned Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to change the bail and justice systems in Canada. In a letter to Trudeau, Chief Myron Demkiw and Board Chair Ainsworth Morgan added their voices to those calling for bail reforms and called for additional specific revisions to the penal code regarding gun crimes.

Demkiw and Morgan included data from the Toronto Police in their letter on individuals who were released on bail following an initial arrest for a firearm-related offence. In Toronto, 165 people who had been released on bail after being accused of using a firearm in 2021 were later re-arrested, including 98 for using a firearm and 67 for other offences.

They also want Trudeau to change the present one-third parole eligibility rule so that anyone who kills another person with a gunshot in a crowded area can be prosecuted with first-degree murder and, if found guilty, must spend at least two-thirds of their sentence before being eligible for parole.

Liberals Pull Two Amendments
The Liberals pulled two of their proposed amendments to the bill:

Amendment G-4, which would label every semi-auto, centrefire rifle and shotgun that can take detachable ammo magazines as “Prohibited” and result in confiscation.
Amendment G-46, the Liberals’ 307-page “ban list” of specific rifle and shotgun models to be confiscated.
SECU Continues Review
The amendments, proposed in November, were withdrawn today at the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security (SECU) that is reviewing Bill C-21.

SECU voted to keep exploring the Liberals’ anti-gun efforts in the coming weeks.
They will then vote to adopt Bill C-21, then send it to the Liberal-controlled Senate before it becomes law.

Bill C-21 Is Still Mass Gun Confiscation
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau proposed Bill C-21 in May 2022 as his latest legislative attack to weaken citizens, destroy the firearm industry and kill gun culture.

It targets government-licensed firearm owners with mass criminalizations and confiscations.
If passed, it will solidify two of Trudeau’s recent Orders in Council (OICs) against firearm users:
His May 2020 OIC to confiscate many popular rifles and shotguns.
His October 2022 OIC to confiscate all our legally owned handguns after the owner dies.

Wake-Up Call, More to Come
The November amendments were a wake-up call to many of Canada’s 2.3 million government-licensed firearm users who failed to grasp the Liberals’ confiscation plans.
Even though the expanded seizures were withdrawn from Bill C-21, they are a Liberal priority and will be proposed again in another form.
The Liberals are preparing a series of other restrictions, prohibitions, and confiscations to suppress honest firearm users.
