Bleeding fish

Do you bleed fish when you catch them? Does it truly make a difference, or is it another fad?

Never even heard of bleeding fish. When i clean them i just make sure i pop the blood cavity along the spine and rinse the blood out. Been doing it that way for 45 years and they all taste good!

Walleye i had for dinner tonight was done that way and can't imagine it could possibly taste any better if it was "bled" properly.

I have done both, bleeding and not bleeding, I never really noticed a difference in taste.

Most of the bleeding fish stuff I have seen is for red meat ocean species such as Tuna and others. I have never bled out a fresh water fish before cleaning it.

Never on freshwater species. Salt yes, on some.

Yep I do this with walleye. The meat is excellent!

I did have piece of Pike that Big John fried up that was amazing. But again, straight from the lake

we depended a lot on fish to survive, we fished the
Mississippi river and lots of it's tributaries and the
only fish my Dad would bleed was the Bowfin/
also called dogfish or grinnle, dad said if you don't
bleed them they would fry up mushy,don't
know of any other fish he would bleed,,,,

I remember seeing something about this somewhere....
After cooking what looked like a nice piece of filet, it ended up looking like a bowl of oatmeal. Strange.
They were always a by-product of running trotlines here in Texas. A lot of times they ended up as pieces of cut bait for cats. I can't think or know of anyone I know personally that ever tried to cook one of these things.

We always skinned them like catfish then scored them deeply
and fried them in huge castiron pot in lord,
and as i can best remember they were pretty good
or maybe i was hungry

A couple of nights ago I had to clean two walleye we caught. We had bled them immediately upon catching them. One thing that was definite when it came to cleaning, was how much less mess when the fillet was cut from the body. We are still in the grip of winter so I had to do the filleting indoors. The mess reduction alone makes the bleeding process worthwhile.

When we get to eat fish cleaned in that way, I may have an opinion about flavour benefits.
