Brand New To Crossbows

Post by Fletcher »

Hi all, I'm brand new to crossbows so please be kind :) I'm about to buy my first xbow and have been looking/reading ALOT!. I have to say this is by FAR the best site I have ever seen on this topic. I was going to buy a Ten Point but after seeing what you all had to say, and how Bill Troubridge treats his customers, I will not even consider any other xbow other than a Xcal. I'm going to buy the Exocet200 on Saturday. Here's what I need to know right now (If there's anything I'm missing, feel free to comment). 1. What is a good bolt for this bow? I was looking at Beman (Carbon), but which shaft (weight..length...etc.) 2. What type of insert? (Brass, Aluminum?) 3. What Broadhead? I was thinking Slicktrick but where can I find them in Toronto and, what weight should I use? I'll be hunting deer for the most part but moose is a definate possibilty as well, if possible give me suggestions for both critters?

P.S. Is Mark still around and making aftermarket stocks for the Exocet200, I want a price and avalibilty on the Maple one I saw a picture of on this website, man that's a SWEET stock.

Thanks in advance

Okay, those things can vary.

What animal are you going to be hunting?

P.S. - Welcome to the forum :)

Welcome to the forum Fletcher!
You will certainly be happy with your new Bow, I shoot an Exocet Deluxe 175 and shoot 20" Carbon Bolts from mine.. I did get some special Bolts made up from bj on the forum I Had some Turkey feathers for fletching and bj put them on 19" Laser II Carbons with Brass inserts .
As fars as Broadheads go, I think you would be fine with 100g for Deer , I use wasp Boss 100's... For moose( I don't moose hunt) you might want to use 125g maybe even a heavier bolt than Carbon's...

There are alot of folks on this forum that will be able to give you more information than me

Enjoy your new Exocet 200

Well for deer I would use 20" LazerII's with 100gr. slicktricks, and for moose of which I have never hunted I would step up too a heavier bolt like 425g. total weight.... :D

LoneWolf can give ya some pointers on the moose as others on the forum can.

Make sure if you are going to purchase or make your own bolts that you use a FLAT insert or nock at the rear of your bolt, no moon nocks.

Okay well I would say for deer, I would use a Gold Tip Laser 2 Carbon with 100 gr broadheads. For moose I would go with a 2219 Aluminum or Beman Thunderbolt with a 125 gr broadhead.

My 2 cents

Thanks For The Help Guys...

Hey thanks alot guys for your warm welcome and advice, it's been very valuable to me. I'm thinking now of using a 20" Gold Tip with the Slick Trick BH's and a brass insert (sound right to the deer hunters?). Does it matter if I use a helical or straight offset fletching? I was reading a new post on here today and now I'm just a little confused..hmmm. If no one seems to have a solid answer I'll just follow the post and decide from there. A great, friendly forum....

P.S. Thanks Digger for the heads up on the stocks, does Mark still frequent the forum?

Fletcher, He's still making stocks for forum members and he probably read his PMs for orders.
