The area I hunt west of Ottawa is severely over populate with deer. The farmers have a deer cull in the spring and let the bodies rot where they drop. The ministry of natural resources is there to monitor the cull but doesn't stop the farmers. If the Fisher takes a couple of fawns that’s fine with me, (and with the local farmers).dsr wrote:Maybe you should have shot it.I understand that they can take fawns and wild turkey--both of which I'd sooner have around. Haven't I also heard something about them dropping from trees on victims? Because of its size it would have made an interesting shot.

Fisher are protected from hunting, can only be trapped.dsr wrote:Maybe you should have shot it.I understand that they can take fawns and wild turkey--both of which I'd sooner have around. I've seen fisher on several occasions and have come across over a dozen porky carcasses they have dined upon. Tough animals for sure. After having worked with domestic ferrets that might top 3lbs I would never even try to handle a fisher that may weigh as much as 15lbs!! A three pound ferret is not easy to hold onto when it doesn't want to be held, and when they bite.... OUCH!!!! You cannot pry their mouths open! Think about it this way, the wolverine, a larger cousin to the fisher(perhaps double in size) has the second strongest bite out of any land carnivore on the planet(the hyena being the only one with greater jaw strength).
They don't bother me and I enjoy seeing them. Would love to see one in action as it takes on a porky!!
You can take the man out of the woods but you can't take the woods out of the man.

Thats a nice female fisher. The pelt would fetch ya up to $50. I have a quota of 7, which I fill every year. This year there are so many around they just eliminated quotas for eastern ontario.
I don't know about fawns, but they do have a fondness for cats, and will even go after small lapdogs. They are not a threat to humans (unless you try to pet one
). They have very powerfull jaws, I had one bite right through my rubber hunting boot toe. They do spring from trees, mostly on hares and grouse (their main foods around here). In the fall they hang around areas where they can feast on gutpiles, so I'm not surprised they follow crossbow hunters around!
Fishers are my favorite animals to trap. They're easy to catch, easy to skin, and bring in a good price at the fur auction.
