Post by aaron_simkovich »

So my dad got a compound bow, and he said the crossbow is mine...

its an older model its called the excalibur exomag.

its got some boxy red dot scope, along with the mountable quiver

anyone got info on pull weight of this bow?: any thing i should get for it? anything i can get to help extend the life of this thing and reap the benifites of power etc?

aaron_simkovich, you should get yourself some deck wax for the rail and string. It helps keep things operating smoothly.

You might consider getting a rope cocker to cock the bow and ensure an even cock every time.

You got yourself a great bow there, they don't make them anymore. Dad may regret that.

yep bought the bow rope cocker, i did find a way to cock it with my hands, but its stilla bit of a pain to kock as im quite short and reaching the strings while standing was a bit of a chore, but yep got the rope cocker

should i look at shock absorbers, silencers or any of that?

You probably got an old carved tip Emag at 185 lb. get disapator bars to quiet the bow. You got a real decent xbow from your Dad. It is still better than most other xbow on the market. Dont use FFF string or excel string on your bow. Use only

394 Excalibur Standard Crossbow String (re carved tips) 12.50 10.35
395 Excalibur Crossbow Super String - flemish (re carved or molded tips) 18.50 15.30

will get dissipators sometime soon.

i lost an arrow in the woods, the guns sighted in at 25 yds, and i have 125 grain broadheads

im hunting whitetailed deer only with it, should i stay at 125? or should i go to 100, carbon arrows? or aluminum

i ahve some alum shafts left, they are 2217 sized.

with this crossbow, what would you say is the max distance i can shoot a deer at and expect a nice kill shot?

If what your using feels good to you, keep using it. 125's work well in a Emag.

Max Distance That my Friend you will have to work out , how ever as for myself I always try and set up so I never have a shot more than 25 yards
some guys say the feel all right shooting out to 40 yards ,
Here is some thing to think about , even tho it is a cross bow remember that it want out preform a compound as for distance , keep that in mind and you will do ok .

thanks guys, ill try to keep her in and under 40 yds... and will go sight my bow for 30, but i will shoot at different distances so i know how to aim my bow.

edited to add:

im new to bowhunting, and i know scent is a big deal, do you guys use that scent lock stuff ? i was at basspro today and they had a scentlock airtight bag for 50 dollars, and it looked a lot like my sealine drybag for 20 dollars....

this scentlok bag also stunk a lot like vinyl

The rope cocker doesn't just make it easier to cock. Italso insures that the string is cocked straight. A little off can send your arrow elsewhere.

To show this try puting some "whiteout" on your string either side of the rail (uncocked) then hand cock it. Chances are that the string will be cocked more to one side.
