It's a smoke, fire, and water damage restoration company. I can't work in the field anymore so I do all of my work from home.

We had a woman at work that was doing the exact same thing, stealing about 1 or 2 hours of over time ever day. She forged the bosses signature and then sent her OT request to the payroll department. She was in a position where she was responsible for creating the financial reports so she deleted her overtime for the quarterly reports before it was signed off by the boss. In a big organization like ours it took over 2 years for her to be caught but there is always a paper trail. She was fired and charged by the police for stealing.

The boss is a super nice guy and liked her a lot but he fired her as soon as he found out about this and saw the stack of overtime request forms with his forged signatures.

If you have to let someone go for lack of work (layoff) that's tough, but if someone is stealing from you, they are firing themselves, not you. I have no sympathy for someone getting fired for theft. Trust me, he may be shocked, but only because he thought he was smarter than you. He already knows he deserves it.

what you do is you just tell the guy ''you don't know how you are going to get along without him, but you are willing to try''

Its not bright too bright of him to act this way -because most potential employers ask for references

Glad to hear you took care of the problem.

I used to work in Loss Prevention for a large department store. On occasion we would apprehend an employee. The employee was charged and escorted from the store immediately afterwards.

I think more trouble would have followed if you had kept him around longer.

Absolutley agree with ecoaster. I was in a managment position for the last 18 years that I worked. The layoffs are the hardest.

Now all you have to do is plan ahead and decide how to handle the reference call.
