No problen with the bow remaining cocked. The worst damage will occur at the serving, if anywhere at all. If your serving is loose to begin with, then leaving it cocked may separate the serving. However, from what I've seen lately with the new strings, this will not be an issue.
Do not stalk with a cocked bow over your shoulder. It's just not safe. Actually, I found stalking a little easier with the compound. Especially when walking through the woods. The crossbow is better when crawling along the ground . . .you don't need to stand up for the shot.
Range. Most likely you will not get more than 5-10 yards . . .hope you weren't looking for an extra 50.

You will need to build some confidence first.
