Manufacturers called them bolts in an effort to not piss off their main stream buyers. There is a war out there . . .unfortunately, the majority of us never see the front lines. If we did, the war would be over. In the states that DO NOT allow crossbows. The majority of politicians have no clue as to what a crossbow does. . .never had one in their hands. They make their decisions based on what information they are given. The majority of that information is misleading, aimed at the ignorant.

I see the term "bolts" as a weapon for the anti clowns and they use it VERY well. I'd like to take that weapon away from them.

Therefore, I refuse to use it. However, I will not make a big deal out of it. If you think it's proper or cool and want to use it, then go right ahead. I know you mean arrows that are shot by a crossbow.

The word or name bolt relative to crossbows is considered a misnomer by devoted crossbow owners and is used by anti's to demoralize crossbow owners. I believe Scott to be correct on what he says about why manufacturers say what they say. Sticks and stones I say................ who cares, I don't. This thread is a waste of cyberspace!

Time to put this Arrow/Bolt thing to rest. You will all learn something here............ I Did . Apparently they shoot missiles !
Here is the defenition of a crossbow and projectile as written by politicians for new law against crossbows in Western Australia.

Crossbow is an article made or modified to be used with one or
2 hands to discharge a missile by an elastic force
across a stock grooved to direct the missile and
includes the missile.

Unreal hey...... " elastic force" ......"Grooved stock".... "Missiles" At least no-one can get into trouble over here for using crossbows now. None of their weapons will fall under the "governments" crossbow law category.

Still learning . . .copy and paste . . .funny, they use "Boo!" words . . . .

Politicians cultivate loaded language, and often study how to use it effectively: which words to use or avoid using to gain political advantage or disparage an opponent. Heller gives the example that it is common for a politician to advocate "investment in public services," because it has a more favorable connotation than "public spending".[4]

One aspect of loaded language is that loaded words and phrases occur in pairs. Heller calls these "a Boo! version and a Hooray! version" to differentiate those with negative and positive emotional connotations. Examples include bureaucrat versus public servant, anti-life versus pro-choice, regime versus government, and elitist versus expert.[4]

When Kraft Foods invented processed cheese in the early 1900s, traditional cheese makers wanted the new cheese to be labeled "embalmed cheese" by law. The U.S. government considered that term to be disparaging, and required that the product be labeled "process cheese".[5]

Loaded language is often used by news broadcasters as a propaganda technique, but the desire to appear impartial militates against its use. During the Falklands War, British reporters were pressured by politicians to use phrases such as "our troops" and "our fleet", but resisted, preferring "the British fleet" and "the Royal Navy task force". This was done because domestic broadcast television and radio channels were received by people in other countries; reporters deemed it important that their news reports were considered to be credible and trustworthy by this external audience. Hence they avoided such language.

It's all about the message that's intended to be sent:

A Harley biker is riding by the zoo in Washington , DC when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion's cage.

Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents.

The biker jumps off his Harley, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch.

Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly.

A reporter has watched the whole event. The reporter addressing the Harley rider says, 'Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I've seen a man do in my whole life.'

The Harley rider replies, 'Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger and acted as I felt right.'

The reporter says, 'Well, I'll make sure this won't go unnoticed. I'm a journalist, and tomorrow's paper will have this story on the front page...
So, what do you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?'

The biker replies, 'I'm a U.S. Marine and a Republican.'

The journalist leaves.

The following morning the biker buys the paper to see news of his actions, and reads, on the front page;

U.S. MARINE ASSAULTS

AFRICAN IMMIGRANT

AND STEALS HIS LUNCH

I enjoyed the stories, apprechiate both sides. I had no intention to make people post worms in a can or girls eating popcorn but there they were. I honestly was unsure of the correct term but now I understand I can/ will call them both. Thanks for the advice!!

Words are just words, it won't make you any better or worse of a hunter. What is important is that you get out there and use them, regardless of what you are told to call them.

Calling them bolts keeps things interesting. :D
