I struggled with this for several years. Spitfires are 1 of the best mech heads on market, but they have 2 weaknesses.
1. They have a large cut diameter and no cut on contact tip, so they require A LOT of energy to open and/or pass through the target.

2. The system they utilize to lock blades closed is a dimpled spring steel shim which loses its ability to keep the blades closed via friction with each and every time the blade is opened. In addition to this many people simply overtighten the blade screws which also crush that dimple and preven it from providing enough resistence during acceleration out of the bow. Obviously this is a proportional thing and the faster the arrow is loaded(such as recurves)on the shot, the more friction required to keep them shut.
This affects the accuracy of the head horribly, especially if 1 blade comes up and others stay closed..

Solution to this is to replace the shims that come with the blades, do not overtighten them, or as mentioned simply put rubber bands over blades like other expandables use.

These heads hit exactly where field points hit and the practice blades they sell for these are useless and just tear up your targets, and fletching when they slip through a broadhead target. And dont even think about trying those practice blades into a bag target,as you will never get them out.

tomcat . . I agree with you . . .fortunately, the crossbows we use had more than enough power for issue #1. Issue #2, well, as stated, I use the elastics.

Every broadhead has it's pros and cons. We need to understand them and use them to their best potiential for our needs.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.
Perception trumps intention.
