im not sure of your size/stature, but i would recommend a 200-225 pound bow. the excals are a good bow. once you learn how to do your own servings(which is easy), youll pretty much be maintainance free.
the models pre matrix are some what cumbersome compared to compound bows. but the simplicity, strength and warranty justifies this imo.

coming from rifles, i was a little disappointed about the sudden trajectory drop of arrows and the limit of 50 yard shots(accurately). but now i have since learnt the joy of stalking and hunting and learning my bow. im happy with my excal!

Welcome to the forum.

I went with Excal just by a stroke of good luck. I didn't know much about crossbows when I bought my first one many many years ago but it was the only brand the gun shop sold. Lucky me.

The rest is history as they say. Three Excals later and I now own a Vortex and have a Phoenix for my wife and daughters.

Like the banner at the top says, "Recurve...Simply Perfect!"
Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.

Also Excalibur has a quiet safety. I would recommend an Ibex, Phoenix or Vixen II, as they are easier to cock. I have an Ibex and would have been unhappy with any more draw weight. These guys are right about limiting shots to 30 yards and at 30 yards even 300 fps is not needed.

Everyone has said it all, I looked at the simplicity and being able to change everything myself and not having to drive to an archery shop. We have 2 at our house and I wish I a couple more. The warranty is great and the people on this forum will help you with everything without hesitation not like other forums. You can't go wrong with an Excal the hardest part is deciding which one to buy.

Good Luck and Welcome to the forum

Run any other model over with your pick up and see what kind of service you get. Dry fire any other model and see what service you get. Have any question and see how long it may take other manufacturer to get back to you. Check out the other forums and see if you can find others that will share everything they know to make you better in the sport. Why make things complicated. :D
Any other questions?

You can leave the thing cocked in the closet for years, run the dang thing over with a van, drop it from a tree stand, it will survive a tornado. You can act like you don't love it and neglect the heck out of it and it will still shoot like the first day you bought her. Perfect

Excals slogan should be: hope ya got kids: it will outlast you!

What a community this is. I've been reading post after post of how you all help each other out. It's really like one big family! I'll keep you updated when I make the plunge! I'll be heading out to the bow-shop either Friday night or Sat AM to fire some!

Cheers all

Ern, when you shoot, and I am speaking from experience here and this may sound mundane, but don't let your thumb stick up like is common when shooting a rifle. The tip ofa thumb is a terrible thing to waste. Many others here will attest to this. Lol :? Cheers.

Hunt or be hunted!!

I would have started swinging the crossbow at the buck, seems how it couldn't deliver a bolt very well! Or stuffed a frog in it's mouth!
