I would love to try a ghillie blanket, but for now my leaf suits work fine. Have killed 3 nice bucks just laying on the ground (weeds) or in ditches the last few years. Small Harris bi-pod and some well placed clumps of grass and you're all set. A couple years ago I had a yearling buck just about step on the foot stirrup on my Exocet. Wind was right and he walked right past the end of the bow. It was cool.

Check out Rancho Safari's "Shaggy longcoat" this was one of the first ghillie suits made for bow hunting. They are a tad on the heavy side but are made very well. As others have said, depending on the area you hunt they can become problematic getting hung up in downed branches, multi flora rose, briers etc. The ghillie suits work really well especially if you spray down with a cover scent like "fresh earth". There are the times during late day when air currents change with the sun setting and never seems to fail a good swirl of wind can betray your position...

After last season and how many deer did not see my bro-inlaw I decided to get the same camo as he uses for early fall.

Code: Select all

http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/search.cmd?form_state=searchForm&N=0&fsch=true&Ntk=AllProducts&Ntt=ghili+leaf&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products
It's on sale and looks great. Lots of zippered pockets and zippered legs to help getting on over boots.

Looks good. I've worn their Leafy Wear for years (12-15) with great results. But needed something a little better for a few choice spots this year. Had one at 15yds last night - clueless. I was even able to reach down and grab the range finder and range it and put it back - a lot of slow movement. Clueless. As it moved away I moved a bit more then froze as a test. It saw it, stared in my directions for about 30-40 seconds and went right back to eating. Ghille suits are the bomb.

Several times, I have been standing against a tree on a hillside next to a deer trail, wearing nothing more than the old fashioned tree bark camowear, (black/grey) face painted, gloves on, wind in my face, and have reached out, touching does, or slapping them on the ass, and watching them explode and run, wheezing and snorting and crashing thru the brush. they would have eventually as they passed me,,smelled me. Do not make eye contact with them is a absolute must and play the wind. And,,don't move. Fun and games!!! :)

After seeing all the deer on the hayfield field where I hunt I decided to just lay out in the open wearing my Cabela's Ghili-leaf camo. Now this is a mown hayfield with no real features other than 3 small lakes. I had a fawn with in 25yds and two does within 30yds. Once they got close they could tell I was "new" to the area but were fine until I moved my head to get a better view...they were at my 7 o'clock. I learned real quick that when in the open on the ground...you CANNOT move. They circled around until down wind and bolted. This happened 3x Thursday night.

Still, it was quite a rush being that close on the ground. This was my first time hunting on the same level and I really liked it. The camo def did it's job though. I think I would have been fine if I had been in a better position.

Looks good. That hood might block your vision a bit so you may have to modify

Great timing for this thread.

I just picked up a Redhead leafy camo suit this week at Goodwill for $15 (they classified it as a "suit!" ) It looked as if it had never even been worn.

At the checkout a lady asked me if it was a halloween costume. I told her it was for turkey hunting (didn't want to have the "bambi" converation).

Hope to give it a try this weekend.
