I never raise or lower my crossbow with the stirrup pointing up.
I use parachute rope with a large loop on the end.
Pass the loop through the handle then open loop and pass it over the butt pull tight.
No way it can slip off.
Raise and lower the bow with the front end always pointing down.
It is cocked but never with an arrow in place. Always carry a full quiver so it is easy to see that all arrows are accounted for.
While walking I feel the time lost removing an arrow from the quiver when needed plays very little on whether I shot or not. I only shot if the deer presents a good shot. If its moving or is focussed on me then I hold off. I feel the possibility of Jumping the string is more of an issue resulting in major consequences more so than not especially if you have the deers full attention.

They already do on most of there models just behind the pistol grip.
However it is not necessary to to have a hole or use a clip attached to a rope just a large loop on the end of rope can be safely locked in place.

Feed the end of the rope with loop end through the opening then open the loop and place the loop over the butt end. Pull the rope tight forcing the loop tight against the stock.
A similar use of the loop can use to secure the rope to the rifle type grip also in a manner just as secure. If you use a sling it will enhance this way of securing the rope to the end of the stock even more.

Bill, what an absolutely dumb @ss thing to do! No excuses accepted...and thank you so much for sharing this horrific experience with us. These toys are just like handling firearms and there is never any room for mistakes, none...never. It's thoughtful and courageous of you to tell us about this as it's a reminder to all of us to stay sharp and keep on our toes. I'm glad you're okay.

I do the same as chameleon for bow and guns - loop through loop and around stock.

It always points down. Always unloaded.

I also make sure the pull up rope is short enough that the bow or gun doesn't touch the ground.

S**t happens. If we're lucky we live to share our close calls to keep others from having the same experiences. We're all here for each other. We need each person's wisdom and experience.

Early on here someone posted that they would slip a rubberband over their stock and over the safety to ensure it was held down. I adopted that practice after walking through some thick brush and finding my safety had been flicked up to fire. The rubberband trick also gives me extra security against a dryfire when using the pull up rope.

I wish i could remember who first posted about that here so i could give credit.

Wow!!!....another great safety measure (no pun intended) to implement!...

....this definitely will be incorporated by me! Thanks VixChix :D

I can't take credit for that one Anthony! Wish I could remember who it was that provided that tip originally.

I once stored a spare rubberband on one of the t-handles of my rope cocker... it quickly became a sensory thing for me - I always knew by feel which handle should be on the left... and therefore my hooks would always be oriented up (which is my personal preference). It became handy when cocking in the pre-dawn dark. So now I need 2 rubberbands - one for my t-handle and one for my stock.

Glad this came up as my bow and cocker are currently naked - the rubberbands wore and broke and I haven't replaced them. Going to do that right now!
