Another look at 100 yard shooting

Re: Another look at 100 yard shooting
I guess you can pick up some emotion from what I said above. This emotion stems from a strongly held value that the animals we kill and eat should be killed as quickly and efficiently as we can. I think it is awful when an animal has to spend the last few hours/days/months of its life wounded and in pain. Based in this value I only make shots I know I can make 100% of the time (30 yards or less for me). Even so, sometimes something goes wrong, a branch I didn't see, the deer suddenly moves (because they heard a gun go off for example..), a gust of wind moves the tree i'm in etc. All of these things that can go wrong are multiplied at 100 Yards
Re: Another look at 100 yard shooting
This video is just one example. There are a whole slew of the video on YouTube that shows deer eyeballing the arrow coming at them and reacting to get out of the way of what they are seeing coming at them. Believe what you will, and build your equipment however you wish, but video evidence is out there to show otherwise.newbie wrote: ↑Sat Jan 20, 2018 2:38 pmI agree with Racking. That deer was already looking toward the shooter. Most likely shooter made noise or deer caught his movement and it definitely didn't move until that arrow exited.racking up points wrote: ↑Sat Jan 20, 2018 12:19 pmCool video, which proves nothing. I stand by my statement. The buck reacts as the arrow is through him. That buck could have been reacting to anything, and he certainly wasn’t jumping the arrow vanes. His body doesn’t even drop like string jumper would. I’ve heard of string jumping, but vane jumping just isn’t a factor. Remember, they’re colourblind. Let’s be serious...
I have shot many deer that have been looking right at me and they couldn't get out of the way less then 30 yards fast enough even with my bright vanes.
Re: Another look at 100 yard shooting
Thanks I will to both.
It's never been a problem for me of deer getting out of the way of my shot. I definitely don't worry about them seeing my arrow in flight..... it's too late then

If I had to shoot over 30 yards I wouldn't call myself a bowhunter.

Wow , apparently I'm no bowhunter then since I have killed a few deer over 30 yards . Sometimes when they walk by me they are a little over 30 yards and I shoot them anyhow I guess I need to refine my hunting skills a few more years so they will always be inside 30 yards .Johnny One Shot wrote: ↑Sat Jan 20, 2018 7:44 pmIf I had to shoot over 30 yards I wouldn't call myself a bowhunter.

Me to! My last 3 were all between 32 to 36 yards out.xbowhunter10 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2018 8:05 amWow , apparently I'm no bowhunter then since I have killed a few deer over 30 yards . I guess I’m in this boat as well because I have taken many deer with archery equipment up to 50yds and I guarantee I’m a bowhunter.

Ain't killed many INSIDE of 30 yards, but sure killed a PILE outside of that!
You really do not want to know what I consider "maximum range" with my 380!
And I would seriously wonder at any who did not consider me a Bowhunter!!
Cheers,

That Nog, is one of the biggest understatements I've heard in a very long time. BTW, the last deer I shot and killed with a crossbow was my spike mulie at 40yards.. You can really tell who's a western hunter and who's not. That being said I'd always prefer shooting my game between 5 - 20 yards....it's just I prefer something besides my tags in my soup. .....and if conditions are right and within my personal effective range, great.IronNoggin wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2018 3:47 pmHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!Johnny One Shot wrote: ↑Sat Jan 20, 2018 7:44 pmIf I had to shoot over 30 yards I wouldn't call myself a bowhunter.

***had to edit...it was 40yards not 47yards.

Re: Another look at 100 yard shooting
Most of you are correct. You are not bowhunters, your crossbow hunters. Just like there are gun hunters, compound hunters , recurve hunters, longbow hunters and selfbow hunters. There not all the same. After you have hunted for 55 years from the ground with a recurve/longbow, you will realize you wont have to take a shot over 30 yards.
Re: Another look at 100 yard shooting
This year I went from vertical compound bow (took about 50 deer this way over 17 years) to crossbow. With the compound 30 yards was my limit and this is based on my skill as an archer. The crossbow is still very new to me and so far 30 yards is the longest shot I've taken. I've taken 3 deer this year with my crossbow and I have to say the biggest problem I'm having is estimating distances. I use landmarks and range them with a rangefinder, however once I'm looking in the 3x scope of my crossbow I can get a little disoriented with those landmarks. This is one reason I have limited myself to 30 yards; another reason is that my crossbow (matrix 380) is much louder than my compound by a lot.. The chance a deer will jump the string is high.
Shooting at still targets with my crossbow I can easily put all my arrows in a 3 inch circle at 50 yards. Even so I feel I should keep my hunting shots under 30 yards..

Re: Another look at 100 yard shooting
congratulations , 53 deer and not a shot over 30 yards. Why shoot any farther and risk a wound. My hats off to you. And welcome to the 30 and under club. I do understand you may have to push it to 40 yards out west. Have a good day everyone.

Re: Another look at 100 yard shooting
You are also correct , most on this forum are probably crossbow only hunters but some also hunt with vertical bows . Most people including myself just consider it all bowhunting . Therefore , in my eyes we are all bowhunters . So to come on an open forum and imply that others shouldn't even call themselves a bowhunter because of a self-imposed distance is almost an insult to me and judging from some of the posts I'm not the only one . A self-imposed distance of any range is just that , self- imposed . I personally wouldn't try to push my thoughts of how far I think someone else should be shooting at a game animal . I feel like members on this forum are well aware of what their equipment will do and use common sense when using it .Johnny One Shot wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2018 10:47 pmMost of you are correct.
