IF there is more then the outer layer of the bark cut, the tree will die. What I call the cork which is under the regular birch bark should be left on the tree. I have see trees that were cut over 20 years ago and still alive.

Most people that harvest some birch bark, do it in an out of the way place, like way back in the woods out of the eye sight of most people.
