Hello Boo
Actually serving the first carried out on 30 strings I am not completely convinced: the diameter of the string serving measured at the center gave me a value mm. 4,25-4,30 = 0.167 "
Then I tried to tighten further with a Gig additional axle to the base and the replacement of hooks tip. By measuring the diameter of the last strings have arrived at a value of mm. 4.15 = 0.163.
I am still able to forge further serving but I'm afraid to exaggerate!
thanks and greetings to all

tytoalba. I am going to have to tell you how to serve a string from the beginning. The only serving tool that I've found to work so far is the Cavalier Pro. No matter how hard I tighten the knobs on the Beiter I can not get enough tension on the spool. The wooden jig you are using cannot put enough tension on the string. The image below is simple, stronger and can put more tension on the string. When using the Cavalier Pro you tighten the wing nuts as tight as you can. The tool will eventually break but only after many servings.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c220/ ... G_0940.jpg
I cannot tell you how much tension I put on the string but I will tell you that you have to put a lubricant on the threads of the hooks or the threads will strip after twenty servings or so.
Once I tension the string I use fast flight material to wrap about an inch or more at this twist transition circled in the image below on the left side only.
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c220/ ... G_0870.jpg
This wrap is needed because the spool tension is so high that serving the string will cause this section of string to become unraveled.
On a new string there is too much wax to serve so you have to use your hand to repetitively rub the string as hard as possible and then let the wax ooze out. You need to do this at least twice.
Split the string on the right side and wrap about four times around. With a pair of pliers pull the tag end and the serving tool apart to tighten the beginning of the serving and then lay on another 8 more wraps. Cut off the tag end the then continue the serving.
Before you are half way stop and hold the tension of the serving tool and reach over and tighten the "J" hook some more because you'll find that the string has lost some tension.
continue until you are twelve wraps short of the end of the serving and start your back serve. http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c220/ ... ving-1.jpg
This part is difficult to describe but you now wrap without the spool but I use a hooked awl to pull. When pulling or tightening each back serve wrap you pull almost as hard as you can down and back toward the center. When you are done the last wrap pull the spool to tighten the last wrap slowly! If you pull to fast you will damage/melt the string material.
Clear as mud???

BTW, this is the Cavalier Pro serving tool. As good as the Beiter is it is too smooth for a crossbow serving. The rods that the string goes around on are what breaks.

tytoalba, the serving jig I showed you is not the one I use. I made/designed that one to be functional and accessible to others. You can add feet to the bottom for stability or attached to a wall with a pair of hinges. Pypiper and I both have metal jigs.

I enjoy reading these posts even though I will never make a string.

But something caught my eye in the photos showing the jig. The cabinet on the right appears to be an old Hoosier cabinet with perhaps some antique bottles displayed. Is this correct Boo?

I also like the warm wood in the table.

I have the one on my bow,the red and black low brace height and my all time favorite the killer bee formerly known as the stinger,I liked killer Bee better so I am good for now.
I find the one I used to hunt with(same one I sent to Harold formerly known as Crazy Farmer)is the fastest followed by the LBH and then the KB
The KB is the quietest with the whiskers,I have shot so much this season I need to send them back for reserving.

Did someone once post about de burring the string claws by light sanding?
I feel I am getting excessive serving wear,Of course I am shooting the bad boy.

Sounds good Don.
tytoalba, I thought you would like to know that the Spigarelli serving tool works well but the tension knob is a bit difficult to turn hard enough. I will change the Spigarelli tension knob with a wing-nut.
By the way tytoalba is George Clooney your neighbor? Shouldn't you have an Owl as your avatar? Do you hunt in your backyard? :D
